My partner and I have done the romantic weekend thing in Puerto Vallarta more times than I can count. And honestly? It never gets old.
There's something about this place. The sunsets. The cobblestone streets. The way the ocean breeze hits you when you're walking hand-in-hand along the Malecón.
If you're planning a couples getaway here, I've got you covered. This is our go-to itinerary. It's the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and romance.
Let's dive in.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Unwind
You just landed. You're probably tired. But trust me, don't waste this first evening.
Drop your bags, freshen up, and head straight to the Romantic Zone. This neighborhood is the heart of Puerto Vallarta. Cobblestone streets. Art galleries. Little boutiques. Restaurants with tables spilling onto the sidewalks.
It's pure magic at sunset.

We always grab dinner somewhere with a view. There are tons of spots where you can sit outside, watch the sky turn orange and pink, and just… breathe.
After dinner, walk down to the Malecón. This iconic boardwalk stretches along the ocean and comes alive at night. Street performers. Sculptures. The sound of waves crashing below.
Hold hands. Take your time. This is what you came here for.
Saturday Morning: Start Slow
Saturdays are for sleeping in. At least a little.
When you're ready, I highly recommend starting the day with yoga on the beach. There's nothing like stretching and breathing with the sand beneath you and the ocean in front of you.
It sets the tone for the whole day.
If yoga isn't your thing, no worries. Grab coffee at one of the cute cafés in the Romantic Zone. Sit on a patio. People-watch. There's no rush here.
The mornings in Puerto Vallarta have this quiet energy. Everything feels calm before the afternoon heat kicks in.
Saturday Afternoon: Adventure Time
Okay, now we're getting into the good stuff.
One of our favorite things to do as a couple is take a boat out to Los Arcos National Marine Park. These giant rock formations rise out of the water just south of town. The snorkeling here is incredible.
You'll see tropical fish. Maybe a sea turtle if you're lucky. The water is warm and crystal clear.

If you'd rather stay on land, there are some amazing hidden beaches you can hike to. The trails wind through jungle and open up to secluded stretches of sand. Bring water and good shoes.
Either way, you'll work up an appetite.
Saturday Evening: Sunset Sail and Dinner
This is the highlight of the whole trip for us.
Book a sunset sailing tour on Banderas Bay. Seriously. Do it.
You'll be out on the water as the sun drops below the horizon. The sky turns every shade of orange, pink, and purple. If you're visiting between December and March, you might even spot humpback whales.
Most tours include drinks and snacks. Some play music. It's romantic without being cheesy.
After the sail, head back to the Romantic Zone for dinner. There are so many incredible restaurants here. Fresh seafood. Mexican cuisine. International flavors. Pick a spot with candlelight and good vibes.
You've earned it.
Sunday Morning: Sleep In Again
I'm a big believer in lazy Sunday mornings. Especially on vacation.
If you've found a great puerto vallarta condo for rent, you'll probably have a balcony with a view. Make coffee. Sit outside. Watch the city wake up.

This is one of my favorite parts of staying in a condo versus a hotel. You have your own space. Your own kitchen. It feels like home, but with ocean views.
Take your time getting ready. Maybe go for one more beach walk before brunch.
Sunday Afternoon: One Last Adventure
Before you head to the airport, squeeze in one more experience.
We love taking a day trip to Yelapa. It's a tiny fishing village about 45 minutes by boat from Puerto Vallarta. No cars. No crowds. Just jungle, waterfalls, and rustic beachside restaurants serving the freshest ceviche you've ever had.
You can also visit Las Caletas if you want something a little more polished. It's a private beach surrounded by jungle with kayaks, paddleboards, and hammocks everywhere.
Either option is perfect for soaking up those last few hours of paradise.
Where to Stay
Location matters. A lot.
We always stay in the Romantic Zone. It's walkable. It's charming. You're close to everything, beaches, restaurants, nightlife, the Malecón.

A condo is the way to go for couples. You get more space than a hotel room. A real kitchen for morning coffee. A balcony for sunset drinks. It just feels more intimate.
Plus, you can actually relax between adventures without feeling like you're in a tiny box.
Tips for Your Trip
Here are a few things we've learned over the years:
Pack light. You'll live in swimsuits and sundresses. Maybe one nice outfit for a fancy dinner.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen. The marine parks here are protected. Regular sunscreen can damage the coral and fish.
Learn a little Spanish. Even just "hola," "gracias," and "por favor" go a long way. Locals appreciate the effort.
Book excursions in advance. Sunset sails and boat trips fill up fast, especially during high season.
Stay hydrated. The heat sneaks up on you. Drink lots of water.
Slow down. This isn't a trip for checking boxes. It's about being present with your partner.
Why Puerto Vallarta for Romance?
I've been to a lot of places. But Puerto Vallarta just hits different for couples.
It's not overcrowded like Cancún. It's not sleepy like some smaller beach towns. It's got this perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Culture and nature. Energy and calm.
The sunsets alone are worth the trip. But add in the incredible food, the warm people, and the gorgeous scenery: and you've got something really special.
Whether it's your first trip together or your twentieth anniversary, this place delivers.
Final Thoughts
A romantic weekend in Puerto Vallarta doesn't have to be complicated.
Arrive Friday. Explore the Romantic Zone. Watch the sunset from the Malecón.
Saturday, do yoga on the beach. Snorkel at Los Arcos. Sail into the sunset.
Sunday, sleep in. Sip coffee on your balcony. Take one last adventure before heading home.
Simple. Beautiful. Unforgettable.
If you're looking for the perfect couples getaway, this is it. I promise you won't regret it.
See you in paradise.
