Fair warning though – the streets are hilly with lots of steps. Wear comfortable shoes. Trust me on this one.
I love grabbing my morning coffee and just walking. No destination in mind. Just exploring.
You'll find local vendors selling fresh fruit. Street musicians playing traditional Mexican songs. Art galleries tucked between colorful buildings. Every corner has something new.

I love walking it solo because the vibe shifts constantly. You can do it three times in one day and have completely different experiences.
The sculptures along the way are amazing photo opportunities. The ocean views are stunning. And when sunset hits? Pure magic.
Grab a cold coconut from a vendor. Find a bench. Watch the sky turn pink and orange over Banderas Bay.

Authentic Bites: Where the Locals Actually Eat
Okay, let's talk about the REAL reason I keep coming back to Puerto Vallarta.
The food. The incredible, authentic, life-changing food.
Forget the tourist restaurants with English menus and Americanized portions. I want to share my local favorites with you.
Tacos Sonorita is a must. The tacos here are simple, fresh, and absolutely perfect. This is where locals go for a quick bite. The prices are fair and the flavors are authentic.
Pancho's Takos is another gem. It's casual, it's delicious, and it's the real deal. Order a few different tacos and try everything.
El Campanario serves up traditional dishes that'll make you forget restaurant food back home even exists. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming for solo diners.
For something special, Cafe Des Artistes is worth the visit. It's a bit more upscale but absolutely worth experiencing at least once during your trip.
And Gloria's Restaurant has the freshest seafood in a genuinely local setting. No frills. Just amazing food.
Here's my tip: walk into town from the beach areas. You'll find fresher, more authentic meal options away from the main tourist strips.
Morning Rituals: Starting Your Day Right
One of my favorite solo activities is morning yoga on the beach.
There's something incredibly grounding about stretching on the sand as the sun rises over the bay. The sound of waves. The fresh morning air. It sets the perfect tone for a day of exploration.
After yoga, I usually grab breakfast at a local cafe. Simple eggs, fresh fruit, strong coffee. Heaven.
Then I plan absolutely nothing.
That's the beauty of solo travel. You wake up and decide what feels right in that moment.
Adventures for One
Solo doesn't mean boring. Not even close.
Whale watching tours are incredible here. Many include marine biologist commentary so you actually learn something while watching these magnificent creatures. It's a great way to meet other travelers too.
Los Arcos de Mismaloya offers fantastic snorkeling. The rock formations are stunning and the marine life is abundant. You can easily join a group tour if you want company.
For a rewarding challenge, hike La Cruz Hill. It's about 20 minutes of steep climbing, but there's a viewing structure and café at the top. The panoramic views are absolutely worth the effort.
Or just find a quiet spot on Playa Los Muertos or Playa Conchas Chinas. Bring a book. Order a drink from a beach vendor. Relax.
Nobody's rushing you. That's the whole point.
Getting Around Solo
Good news: you don't need a car here.
The tourist zones are completely walkable. That's what I love about this city. You can explore on foot and discover so much more than you would from inside a vehicle.
When you need to go further, taxis and Uber are readily available. Local buses are super inexpensive and an adventure in themselves.
Just expect some bumpy rides on the cobblestone streets. It's part of the charm.
