We've walked through dozens of Puerto Vallarta neighborhoods over the years, but 5 de Diciembre always feels different.
It's quieter. More authentic. And honestly, way more romantic than the busier tourist zones.
Located just north of the historic center between the Río Cuale and the Municipal Stadium, this little pocket of PV is where locals actually live their lives. You won't find throngs of cruise ship tourists here. Just cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and the kind of authentic Mexican atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and just be present with your partner.
Starting Your Afternoon Walk
We usually begin our 5 de Diciembre strolls around 3 or 4 PM when the afternoon light gets all golden and perfect.
The neighborhood is super walkable and compact. You can easily explore it in an hour or two, but we always end up stretching it out because there's so much to discover tucked into these residential streets.

Start anywhere along the main streets that define the area. The beauty is that you can't really get lost here: it's small enough that you'll always find your way back.
What I love most is how safe it feels. We've wandered these streets countless times, and there's always this relaxed neighborhood vibe where people are sitting outside their homes, kids are playing soccer in small plazas, and local vendors are selling fresh fruit from their carts.
The Cobblestone Romance
There's something inherently romantic about cobblestone streets.
They force you to slow down. To watch your step. To hold hands a little tighter as you navigate the uneven stones worn smooth by decades of footsteps.
5 de Diciembre has some of the best-preserved cobblestone streets in Puerto Vallarta. They wind up gentle hills, curve around colorful buildings painted in shades of terracotta and yellow, and occasionally open up to reveal stunning views of the bay below.
We always bring our camera because the photo opportunities are endless. Bright bougainvillea spilling over walls. Old wooden doors painted vibrant blues and greens. Window boxes overflowing with flowers. It's ridiculously photogenic.

The residential nature of the neighborhood means you get glimpses into real life here. Laundry hanging on lines. Someone's abuela sweeping her doorstep. The smell of fresh tortillas drifting from an open window.
This is the Puerto Vallarta that exists beyond the resort brochures.
Hidden Local Eateries Worth Finding
One of our favorite things about 5 de Diciembre is stumbling upon tiny family-run eateries that don't advertise and barely have signs.
These aren't fancy restaurants. They're the kind of places with plastic chairs and hand-written menus where you point at what someone else is eating and say "dos de esos, por favor."
We've found some incredible taco stands tucked into corners where locals line up for al pastor tacos dripping with pineapple juice. There's a tiny spot that makes the best pescado zarandeado we've ever tasted: grilled fish rubbed with spices and served with warm tortillas.
The seafood here is phenomenal because it's so close to the fishing community. Everything is caught fresh that morning.

Don't expect English menus or tourist prices. Bring some pesos and be ready to point and smile. That's part of the charm.
We love grabbing something simple: maybe some ceviche tostadas or a couple of quesadillas: and eating as we walk, completely undressed and unpretentious.
The Small Fish Market Experience
Speaking of fresh seafood, you absolutely have to visit the small fish market in 5 de Diciembre.
It's not a big tourist attraction. It's literally just where local residents come to buy their fish for dinner. But walking through is such a cool cultural experience.
The vendors are friendly and proud of their catch. You'll see whole red snappers, massive dorado, fresh octopus, and shrimp still twitching. Everything is laid out on ice, and the vendors will happily tell you what's best that day.
Even if you're not buying (though if you're staying in a rent apartments puerto vallarta with a kitchen, you should), it's fascinating to watch locals haggle over prices and select their fish with the expertise of people who've been doing this their whole lives.
The market typically operates in the mornings and early afternoons, so time your walk accordingly if you want to catch it in full swing.
Art Galleries and Street Murals
5 de Diciembre has a surprisingly vibrant art scene for such a residential neighborhood.
We've discovered several small galleries tucked into converted homes where local artists display their work. These aren't the polished gallery spaces you'll find on the Malecón: they're more intimate and personal.
You might walk past an open door and see an artist actually working on a piece. Or find a courtyard gallery where paintings lean against walls and sculptures sit on handmade tables.

The street art here is also incredible. Murals decorate walls throughout the neighborhood, adding splashes of color and contemporary Mexican artistic expression to the historic architecture.
We always take time to appreciate these artistic touches. They add so much character and show how this neighborhood is living and evolving while still maintaining its authentic charm.
The Views That Make It Worth It
Here's what surprised us the first time we explored 5 de Diciembre properly: the views are spectacular.
Because the neighborhood sits on a hillside, certain streets offer incredible panoramas of the Bay of Banderas. You'll be walking along a quiet residential street, and suddenly there's this gap between buildings, and boom: there's the entire bay sparkling in the afternoon sun.
The mountain views going the opposite direction are equally stunning. Lush green hills rise up behind the neighborhood, creating this perfect backdrop of tropical vegetation.
These views are what make our afternoon strolls here feel so special. You're not at some designated viewpoint fighting for space with other tourists. You're just walking through a neighborhood, and beauty keeps revealing itself around every corner.
If you're staying in a rental property in puerto vallarta mexico nearby, this neighborhood becomes your backyard. We love being close enough to make it part of our daily routine rather than a one-time tourist expedition.
Why We Keep Coming Back
After all our time in Puerto Vallarta, 5 de Diciembre remains one of our favorite neighborhoods for afternoon walks as a couple.
It's authentic without trying to be. It's beautiful without being manufactured. It's safe, accessible, and endlessly interesting.
Every time we walk these streets, we discover something new. A café we hadn't noticed before. A mural that's recently appeared. A tiny tienda selling homemade pan dulce.
The neighborhood has that rare quality of feeling completely local while still being welcoming to visitors who approach it with respect and curiosity.
For couples looking to experience the real Puerto Vallarta: not the resort version or the tourist version, but the actual living, breathing city where people make their lives: 5 de Diciembre delivers in the best possible way.
