I've never been much for big Valentine's celebrations.
The crowded restaurants. The overpriced prix fixe menus. The pressure to make everything perfect.
But last year, my partner and I stumbled onto something that felt way more romantic than any fancy dinner reservation. We woke up early and watched the sunrise together from our balcony.
No plans. No expectations. Just coffee and the quiet morning light spreading across Banderas Bay.
Why Early Morning Wins Valentine's Day
Here's what I love about sunrise on Valentine's Day.
The world is still asleep. There's no noise from the street below. No crowds at the beach. No vendors setting up their stands.
It's just you and the person you're with. Or if you're traveling solo, it's just you and your thoughts and the incredible sky changing colors minute by minute.

I made coffee in our little kitchen and we sat on the balcony with blankets wrapped around our shoulders. The air was cool but not cold. The kind of temperature that makes you want to sit close.
We didn't talk much at first. We just watched.
The sky went from deep purple to pink to orange to that brilliant gold that only happens right when the sun breaks the horizon. The entire bay lit up. The mountains in the background went from black silhouettes to green and textured.
It took maybe twenty minutes total. But it felt like we'd given ourselves hours of peace.
Setting Up Your Sunrise Experience
You don't need much to make this happen.
Wake up early enough to get settled before the show starts. In Puerto Vallarta, sunrise varies through the year but it's usually between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. Set an alarm for at least thirty minutes before.
Make something warm to drink. Coffee is my go-to but tea or hot chocolate works just as well. The warmth in your hands adds to the cozy intimacy of the whole thing.
Bring a blanket if you're heading to the beach. Even if it's not cold, having something soft to sit on makes the experience more comfortable. Plus you can wrap up together if there's a breeze.
Choose your spot the day before. Scout out where you want to be so you're not scrambling in the dark trying to find the perfect view.

The Best Spots for Sunrise in Puerto Vallarta
If you're staying somewhere with an east-facing balcony or terrace, you're already winning.
Our condo rentals in Puerto Vallarta have these incredible floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the bay perfectly. You can watch the entire sunrise without leaving your pajamas.
The beach works too. Los Muertos Beach is close to the Zona Romántica and gives you an unobstructed view of the water. Get there early and you'll have the sand almost to yourself.
The Malecón is another option. Walk south toward the pier and find a quiet bench. You'll get the ocean on one side and the slowly waking city on the other.
Honestly though? I prefer staying in. There's something about watching sunrise from your own private space that feels more intimate than a public beach.
What Makes This Different from Other Romantic Plans
I think what I love most about sunrise Valentine's is that it removes all the performance pressure.
You're not dressed up. You're probably wearing whatever comfortable clothes you sleep in. There's no reservation you might be late for. No bill to split at the end.
It's just two people sharing a quiet moment.
Or if you're solo, it's a chance to start your day with intention. To sit with yourself before the world demands your attention.

I've done the fancy Valentine's dinners. They're fine. Sometimes they're great.
But they don't give you the same feeling of connection that comes from sitting together in comfortable silence while the world wakes up around you.
After the Sunrise
Here's the other thing I love about planning Valentine's around sunrise instead of dinner.
You have the whole rest of the day ahead of you.
After we watched the sun come up, we made breakfast together. Scrambled eggs and fruit from the market. Nothing fancy but it tasted better than any restaurant meal.
Then we spent the day doing whatever we felt like. We walked through town. We sat at a café and read. We came back to the condo and worked for a few hours (we're both remote workers so that's normal for us).
By evening we were tired in that good satisfied way. We ordered takeout and watched a movie. Perfect.
If we'd planned a big dinner instead, we would have spent the whole day anticipating it. Building it up. Worrying about whether the restaurant would be good or if we'd chosen the right place.
The sunrise took the pressure off. It gave us something beautiful to share without any of the stress.
Why Puerto Vallarta is Perfect for This
The thing about Puerto Vallarta is that every day has good sunrise potential.
The weather is consistent. Even in the summer rainy season, mornings are usually clear. You don't have to worry about waking up early and finding clouds blocking your view.
The bay faces east so you get the full show. The sun rises over the water and the mountains behind you catch the light in this incredible way.
And because the city sits right on the water, you don't need to drive anywhere or plan complicated logistics. You can literally walk out onto your balcony and watch.

I've stayed at several of our Puerto Vallarta condos rentals and every single one has given me good sunrise views. Some are more dramatic than others but they're all worth waking up for.
Making It Your Own
The beauty of a sunrise Valentine's is that you can customize it to whatever feels right for you.
Some people want to bring a journal and write. Some want to meditate. Some just want to sit and be present.
You could bring poetry to read aloud. You could take photos of each other in the soft morning light. You could make it a weekly tradition instead of just a Valentine's thing.
The point isn't to follow a script. The point is to carve out quiet time together before the day gets loud and busy.
My partner and I have started doing this more regularly. Not every day but maybe once a week. It's become our favorite way to reconnect when work and life get hectic.
The Anti-Valentine's Valentine
I guess what I'm saying is that if you're tired of the traditional Valentine's pressure, try the opposite.
Wake up early instead of staying up late. Stay in instead of going out. Choose quiet over noise. Choose simple over elaborate.
It might sound boring on paper. But trust me, there's nothing boring about watching the sky turn gold while you're wrapped in a blanket with someone you care about.
Or by yourself with a good cup of coffee and nowhere you need to be.
That's romance. That's peace. That's the kind of Valentine's Day that actually feels meaningful instead of obligatory.
This year we're doing it again. Already planning it. Already looking forward to it.
You should try it. Set that alarm. Make that coffee. Watch that sunrise.
Highly recommended.
