There's something magical about watching the sun dip into Banderas Bay while sipping margaritas with your partner. My favorite evenings in Puerto Vallarta always involve that golden hour glow, live music drifting through the air, and maybe a little impromptu dancing on the beach.
If you're planning a romantic getaway, you've gotta experience the sunset-to-salsa vibe here. It's honestly one of the best parts about staying at a rental property in puerto vallarta mexico : you're close to all the action but can retreat to your own private paradise when the night winds down.
Starting Your Evening: The Sunset Ritual
I usually start around 5:30 PM. That gives us time to grab a cocktail and settle into the perfect spot before the sky starts doing its thing. And trust me, the sky here does its THING.
Los Muertos Beach is my go-to. It's got that perfect mix of local vibes and tourist-friendly energy. The beachfront restaurants along this stretch have been perfecting the sunset experience for decades.

La Palapa has been around since 1969, and they know what they're doing. We love snagging a table right on the sand where you can feel the ocean breeze and hear the waves. The owner sometimes walks around with his guitar, serenading couples. It's not cheesy : it's genuinely sweet.
Pro tip: Order their fresh catch of the day and a couple of their signature margaritas. Watch the sun melt into the water. Hold hands. It's simple but sooo romantic.
The Magic Hour
Between 6:30 and 7:30 PM, the whole bay transforms. The sky goes from gold to pink to deep purple, and the lights start twinkling across the hillside. This is when I always feel grateful we chose to rent apartments in puerto vallarta instead of staying at some giant resort where you're packed in like sardines.
The best part? You're not watching this spectacle from behind a railing three stories up. You're RIGHT THERE. Toes in the sand, salt air on your skin, the whole experience wrapping around you.

If beachfront isn't your style, head up to Hacienda San Angel Gourmet in the Old Town neighborhood. This place is tucked into a gorgeous mansion with panoramic views of the entire bay and downtown. They serve Mexican and international cuisine with live music on select nights. The ornamental details and the elegant vibe make you feel like you've stepped into another era.
The sunset from up here hits different. You get the whole sweep of the coastline, the cathedral spire, the twinkling lights of Old Town spreading below you. It's breathtaking.
When the Music Starts
As darkness settles in, the energy shifts. The daytime beach vibe mellows out, and the evening entertainment begins. Live music is EVERYWHERE in Puerto Vallarta, and you don't have to search hard to find it.
Many of the beachfront spots transition seamlessly from sunset dining to live performances. La Palapa keeps the music going through dinner service. Other restaurants along the Malecon bring in local bands or duos playing everything from traditional Mexican ballads to classic rock covers.

My partner and I aren't professional dancers by any stretch, but there's something about the atmosphere here that makes you want to move. When a great salsa beat starts up and you see other couples swaying on the sand or near their tables, you just… join in. Nobody's judging. Everyone's just vibing.
We've discovered some amazing moments by simply following the music. You'll hear rhythms floating through the streets of Old Town : just wander toward them. You might stumble onto a small plaza where locals are dancing, or a tucked-away bar with a live band that's absolutely killing it.
The Malecon After Dark
After dinner, we always take a stroll down the Malecon. This oceanfront boardwalk stretches for over a mile along the bay, and at night it comes alive with street performers, artists, musicians, and couples like us just enjoying the scene.
The sculptures along the walkway are beautifully lit. Street vendors sell everything from handmade jewelry to fresh coconut water. And the ocean is RIGHT THERE, waves crashing against the seawall, creating this constant soothing soundtrack to your evening.

Sometimes we stop at one of the beach clubs or bars that dot the Malecon. Many have live DJs or bands, and the outdoor dance floors fill up with people salsa dancing, bachata, or just freestyle moving to the beat. The energy is contagious but never aggressive or overwhelming.
If you want something more low-key, just claim a bench along the seawall. Watch the waves. Listen to the music drifting from nearby venues. Talk about nothing and everything. That's romance too.
Our Favorite Hidden Gems
While the popular spots are popular for a reason, we've also found some quieter treasures perfect for couples who want a more intimate vibe.
La Cappella delivers gorgeous sunset views with a uniquely romantic atmosphere that feels more tucked away. La Terrazza di Roma sits right on Marina Vallarta's boardwalk with outdoor seating overlooking the marina : their handmade pasta and fresh seafood are incredible, and the open-air waterfront setting feels perfectly relaxed.
For the truly adventurous couple, Ocean Grill at Colomitos Beach is accessible only by boat. You combine the romance with a mini-adventure getting there, and then you're basically on a private beach eating fresh seafood with just the sound of waves and maybe a few other couples scattered around. It's special.
Making It Personal
What I love most about romantic evenings here is that they don't follow a script. Some nights we dress up and hit one of the elegant spots like The Iguana Restaurant & Tequila Bar at Casa Kimberly, where we sip mezcal on the alfresco terrace while candlelight flickers and the bay stretches out below us.
Other nights? We grab street tacos, a couple of Pacifico beers, and plant ourselves on Los Muertos Beach until the stars come out. Both are equally perfect.
The key is being present. No phones. No work emails. Just us, the sunset, the music, and this incredible place.
If you've been thinking about planning a romantic getaway, Puerto Vallarta delivers in ways that surprise you. It's not just the scenery or the food or the music : it's how all of it comes together to create these moments you'll remember forever.

The Perfect Ending
By the time we head back, usually around 10 or 11 PM, we're sun-kissed, full of amazing food, and buzzing with that happy energy that comes from a perfectly executed evening. The walk home through Old Town's cobblestone streets, past the glowing cathedral, feels like the ideal ending to our romantic night.
Then we get to retreat to our own space, with those incredible views and the sound of the ocean still audible through the windows. That's the beauty of staying in a place that feels like home rather than a hotel room.
Puerto Vallarta's sunset and salsa scene isn't just for tourists or special occasions. It's part of the rhythm of life here. And once you experience it with someone you love, you'll understand why so many couples keep coming back.
Highly recommended. Every single time.
