Look, I've been living in Puerto Vallarta for a while now, and I've learned that the best date nights here have nothing to do with fancy restaurants or tourist traps. They're about finding those authentic spots where locals actually eat, where the tacos are made with love, and where the tequila is smooth enough to make your partner smile.
My boyfriend Jeff and I have turned taco-and-tequila nights into our weekly ritual. It's become our thing. And honestly? It's way more romantic than any overpriced dinner could ever be.
Why Tacos Make the Perfect Date
There's something inherently fun about tacos. You can't be uptight when you're holding a slightly messy taco in your hands. You laugh together when the salsa drips. You steal bites from each other's plates. You debate which salsa is spicier.
It's intimate without being stuffy.
Plus, in Puerto Vallarta, authentic tacos are an experience. The smell of al pastor spinning on the trompo, the sizzle of carne asada on the grill, the vibrant colors of fresh salsas lined up on the table. It's sensory and exciting and completely unpretentious.

Our Favorite Taco Spots in Zona Romántica
Let me tell you about the places we actually go to. Not the ones recommended in generic tourist guides, but the ones where we've become regulars.
Taqueria Las Güeras is our go-to when we want to sit down and really enjoy the meal. It's on Venustiano Carranza, small and cozy, with the best al pastor I've had anywhere. They serve six different salsas, and Jeff and I always challenge each other to try the spiciest one. The jamaica agua fresca there is incredible when they have it. Sweet, tangy, perfect.
We usually go around 7 PM before it gets too crowded. The vibe is casual but comfortable enough for good conversation.
Don Chava Taqueria Cantina is where we go when we want more energy. It's lively, the service is fast, and there's never really a wait. The atmosphere is upbeat without being loud. We can still talk and hear each other, but there's this fun buzz around us.
They're open Wednesday through Monday, 5 PM to midnight. We've gone as late as 10 PM and still had a great time.

And look, I have to mention Pancho's Takos even though we don't go as often anymore. It's famous for a reason – the tacos are amazing. But expect to wait 45 minutes to an hour during peak times. Sometimes we'll grab tacos there to-go and bring them back to our puerto vallarta condo for rent, pour some tequila, and eat on the balcony with the city lights below us.
That's actually become one of our favorite versions of date night.
The Tequila Side of the Equation
Tacos without tequila? That's just dinner. Tacos WITH tequila? That's a date night.
But here's the thing – you don't need to go to some fancy tequila bar to have a great experience. Most authentic taco places have solid tequila selections. You just need to know what to ask for.
We usually go for a good reposado. It's aged enough to be smooth but not so aged that you're paying crazy amounts. Brands like Espolòn, Pueblo Viejo, or Cazadores are affordable and delicious.

My tip? Ask your server for recommendations. At places like Las Güeras or Don Chava, they know their tequila. Tell them you want something smooth for sipping, not shooting. They'll steer you right.
And please, skip the salt and lime. Good tequila doesn't need it. Just sip it slowly between bites of tacos. Let the flavors play together.
Creating Your Own Perfect Night
Here's how Jeff and I structure our taco-and-tequila date nights, and you can totally steal this formula.
Start early. We usually head out around 6:30 or 7 PM. The Zona Romántica is beautiful at that hour. The light is golden, the streets are lively but not packed, and restaurants aren't at their peak yet.
Walk there together. Don't take a taxi or Uber unless you're far. Walking through the neighborhood, hand in hand, sets the tone. You're already on your date before you even sit down.
Order a variety. Get at least four different types of tacos to share. Al pastor, carne asada, pescado, maybe some carnitas. Then you can trade and share and talk about which ones you like best.
Try the salsas. All of them. Even the scary-looking ones. It's an adventure.
Pace the tequila. This isn't a party. You're not here to get drunk. Order one good tequila each, sip it slowly, and let it enhance the experience rather than overshadow it.
Talk. Put your phones away. Actually talk. About your day, about what you're seeing around you, about your plans for the rest of your trip.
Why This Works Better Than Fancy Dining
I know some couples prefer upscale restaurants for date night, and that's totally fine. But for us, authentic taco spots offer something different.
They're real. There's no pretense. You don't have to dress up or worry about using the right fork. You can be yourselves.
They're affordable, which means you can do this weekly instead of making it a special occasion thing. Regular date nights are more important than occasional fancy ones.
And honestly? The food is better. I'll take authentic al pastor from a local taqueria over overpriced fusion cuisine any day.
Follow us on Instagram to see where we're eating each week. We're always exploring new spots.
Making It Extra Special
Sometimes we add elements to make the night even more memorable.
After tacos, we'll walk down to the Malecón and watch the sunset. Or we'll stop at a quiet spot on Playa Los Muertos and sit on the sand with our feet in the water. If you want more romantic ideas, check out our post about Hidden Gems: A Couple's Sunset Picnic at Playa Conchas Chinas.
Other times, we'll plan a full day around it. We did this amazing Hidden Waterfall Hikes: A Romantic Escape for Couples in PV adventure, then came back, showered, and headed straight to Las Güeras. After being in nature all day, those tacos tasted even better.
The key is making it YOUR tradition. Maybe you go every Tuesday. Maybe you try a different taqueria each week. Maybe you always order the same thing, or maybe you always try something new.

The Best Part About Living Here
The thing I love most about being in Puerto Vallarta long-term is that we can have these experiences regularly. When you're staying in our condo and apartment rentals puerto vallarta, you're not just a tourist checking boxes. You're living like a local.
You have time to find your favorite spots. To become regulars somewhere. To chat with the taquero who remembers how you like your al pastor. To know which nights Don Chava is busiest and which nights you can walk right in.
This is the Puerto Vallarta that tourists miss. And it's so much better than what they're getting.
Our Honest Recommendation
If you're coming to Puerto Vallarta as a couple, do this at least once. Skip the resort restaurant one night. Put on comfortable clothes and walk into Zona Romántica. Find a taqueria that smells amazing and looks busy with locals.
Order too many tacos. Try the spiciest salsa. Sip good tequila. Hold hands across the table. Laugh when the tacos fall apart. Watch the people walking by. Speak terrible Spanish to your server and laugh about it together.
This is romance in Puerto Vallarta. Simple, authentic, delicious, real.
And honestly? After you've done it once, you'll understand why we do it every single week.
