I have spent so much time exploring the winding streets of Puerto Vallarta.
Every corner has a story. Every hill has a view.
But there is one place that feels different from the rest of the city.
It is a place where time seems to slow down.
I am talking about Gringo Gulch.
If you are looking for the most romantic spot in town, this is it.
We absolutely LOVE walking through this neighborhood in the late afternoon.
It is quiet. It is beautiful. It is tucked away right above the main part of downtown.
Most people walk right past the entrance without even knowing it is there.
But for couples who want to escape the noise, it is a total dream.
What is Gringo Gulch?
Gringo Gulch is a historic neighborhood perched on the hillside above the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
It is famous for its colonial-style architecture.
Think bright white walls and red-tiled roofs.
Think steep cobblestone streets and overflowing bougainvillea flowers.
It got its name back in the 1950s and 60s when many expats from the United States started building homes here.
But it became world-famous because of a massive Hollywood scandal.
I think the history of this place is just SOOO fascinating.

The Romance of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
You cannot talk about Gringo Gulch without talking about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
In 1963, Richard Burton came to Puerto Vallarta to film "The Night of the Iguana."
He brought Elizabeth Taylor with him, even though they were both married to other people at the time.
The paparazzi went crazy.
Burton bought a house in Gringo Gulch called Casa Kimberley for Elizabeth’s 32nd birthday.
Then he bought the house across the street for himself.
To stay connected, they built a pink bridge between the two houses.
Locals call it the "Bridge of Reconciliation" or the "Love Bridge."
Standing under that bridge today feels like stepping back into a movie set.
It is the heart of the neighborhood’s romantic vibe.
If you are a couple visiting PV, you have to take a photo there.
It is easily one of the most iconic spots in the entire city.
Why We Love the Architecture
The houses here are not like the modern condos you see in other parts of town.
They are villas. They have heavy wooden doors and wrought-iron balconies.
The gardens are lush and green.
Everything feels very authentic and very Mexican.
We often start our walk at the bottom of the hill and just wander.
There is no "wrong" way to go.
Every street leads to a new discovery.
Sometimes you find a small staircase that leads to a hidden courtyard.
Other times you find a viewpoint that looks out over the entire bay.
The contrast between the white walls and the deep blue ocean is STUNNING.

Starting Your Walk
I recommend starting your walk near the Cuale River.
There is a small footbridge that leads you up into the hills.
The climb can be a bit steep, so definitely wear comfortable shoes!
The cobblestones are uneven, and there are many stairs.
But the effort is totally worth it.
As you climb higher, the sounds of the city start to fade away.
You stop hearing the buses and the honking.
Instead, you hear birds and the wind through the trees.
It is one of those places that feels Beyond the Crowds.
It is peaceful. It is calm.
It is the perfect place to hold hands and just talk.
Sunset in the Gulch
The best time to visit is about an hour before sunset.
The light hits the white houses and turns them a soft golden color.
The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is right below you.
Watching the sun sink into Banderas Bay from these heights is AMAZING.
There is a bar on the terrace of Casa Kimberley that is open to the public.
Sitting there with a drink while the sky turns pink and purple is the height of romance.
We always feel so lucky to live in a place with this much beauty.
If you prefer staying closer to the water, you can always head down after your walk.
You can enjoy Quiet Mornings on the Malecón or romantic evenings by the shore.
But Gringo Gulch has a specific magic that you can’t find anywhere else.

A Photographer’s Paradise
If you like taking photos, bring your camera!
The colors in Gringo Gulch are so vibrant.
The pink bougainvillea against the white walls is a classic PV look.
The shadows on the cobblestones create a lot of depth.
I’ve seen so many couples doing professional photo shoots here.
It makes sense. The background is perfect.
It looks like an old-world European village but with a tropical twist.
Every time we go, I find a new angle or a new flower that I didn’t notice before.
Living the Dream in Old Town
Gringo Gulch is technically part of the historic downtown, which many people call Old Town.
It is very close to the Zona Romántica.
In fact, you can walk from the gulch to the best restaurants in town in about 15 minutes.
That is why we love this area so much.
You get the peace and quiet of the hills, but you are never far from the action.
If you are looking for a puerto vallarta condo rentals, staying nearby is a great idea.
You want to be in a place where you can wake up, grab a coffee, and walk to these historic spots.
Our properties are designed for exactly that.
We focus on creating spaces that are comfortable and beautiful for couples.
We want you to feel the same romance that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton felt.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
I want your walk to be as perfect as possible.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
First, the hills are real.
If you have mobility issues, this neighborhood might be tough.
But for most people, it is just a good little workout.
Second, it is a residential neighborhood.
People live here!
So, we always try to be respectful and keep our voices down.
Third, bring water.
Even in the late afternoon, the humidity in Puerto Vallarta can be high.
Staying hydrated makes the walk much more enjoyable.

The Ultimate Romantic Experience
There are so many things to do in Puerto Vallarta.
You can go to the beach. You can go on a boat.
You can eat at world-class restaurants.
But some of the best memories are the ones that don't cost anything.
Walking through Gringo Gulch is one of those experiences.
It is just you, your partner, and the history of this incredible city.
It feels private. It feels special.
It is the kind of afternoon that stays with you long after your vacation is over.
We highly recommend making this a priority during your stay.

Why Stay With Us?
When we started The PVGirl, we wanted to share the side of Puerto Vallarta that we love.
We didn't want to offer just another hotel room.
We wanted to offer a home.
A place where you can cook a romantic dinner or watch the sunset from your own balcony.
If you are thinking about making PV a permanent part of your life, we can help with that too.
You can even look into owning your own vacation rental.
But whether you are here for a week or a month, the goal is the same.
We want you to fall in love with this city.
And we think a walk through Gringo Gulch is the best way to start.
It is charming. It is historic. It is SOOO romantic.
Go see the Love Bridge. Smell the jasmine in the air.
Take a deep breath and look out over the ocean.
This is the real Puerto Vallarta.
And it is waiting for you.
We can't wait to see you here soon!
Gringo Gulch is a true hidden gem, and we know you will LOVE it as much as we do.
It is the perfect escape for any couple looking for a little bit of magic.
Highly recommended!
