I have spent a lot of time living in and exploring Puerto Vallarta. As the owner of The PVGirl, I’ve walked almost every cobblestone street in this city. People always ask me where the "real" Mexico is. They want to know where the locals eat when they aren’t catering to the big tourist crowds. My answer is always the same: 5 de Diciembre.
This neighborhood is tucked just north of downtown. It is steep, it is vibrant, and it is packed with flavor. If you are a solo traveler looking for an authentic experience, this is your spot. I recently took a solo foodie walk through these hills, and it reminded me why I LOVE this city so much.
When you look for rentals in puerto vallarta, you might be tempted to stay right in the middle of the party. But 5 de Diciembre offers a different pace. It’s a place where you can find puerto vallarta condo rentals that feel like a true home away from home.
Starting the Day at the Market
I started my morning early. The air in 5 de Diciembre is different in the morning. You can smell fresh corn tortillas being pressed and the salt from the ocean just a few blocks away. My first stop was the local market area near the cemetery.
Walking alone as a foodie is the best because you can stop exactly where you want. No debating. No compromising. I saw a small stand selling fresh fruit cups. For just a few pesos, I had a massive cup of mango, lime, and Tajín. It was the perfect fuel for the hills.
The hills here are no joke! You will get your cardio in. But every step is worth it for the views.

The Birria Ritual
You cannot walk through 5 de Diciembre without eating birria. This is a breakfast staple in Jalisco. I found a small street-side cart with a line of locals. That is always the sign of greatness.
I ordered two tacos de birria with a small cup of consomé. The meat was so tender it practically melted. I stood there at the tall metal table, dipping my taco into the rich broth, feeling completely at peace. If you are a solo traveler, these taco stands are your best friend. Everyone is friendly, and nobody cares that you’re eating alone. They just care that you’re enjoying the food!
If you want to live like this every day, you should really look to rent apartments in puerto vallarta in this specific neighborhood. It’s much quieter than the south side but just as delicious.
A Modern Kitchen Break
After a few hours of walking, I headed back toward one of our properties to drop off some local spices I bought. Having a real kitchen is a game-changer for a foodie.

Look at this setup! When you stay in one of our puerto vallarta condo rentals, you get a space like this. I love being able to buy fresh avocados and sea salt at the market and bring them back to a beautiful, modern kitchen. It makes the "solo" part of solo travel feel very luxurious and grounded.
Coffee and Rhythm
By mid-morning, I needed a caffeine hit. 5 de Diciembre has some hidden gem coffee shops that aren't overrun with laptops. I found a quiet corner and just watched the neighborhood wake up.
I actually wrote about this feeling before in my post Finding My Rhythm at a Coffee Shop. There is something so special about finding your own pace in a foreign city. In 5 de Diciembre, the rhythm is steady and welcoming. It’s not about rushing to the next tour; it’s about savoring the moment.
The Seafood Secret
As I moved closer to the beach, I hit the seafood spots. This neighborhood is home to some of the best mariscos in the bay. I stopped at a place that looked like someone’s front porch.
I ordered a ceviche tostada. It was incredibly fresh. The lime juice was bright, and the shrimp were caught that morning. This is the benefit of being a solo foodie: you can squeeze into those tiny corner spots that wouldn't fit a big group.
I sat there, looking out toward the ocean, and felt so grateful. Puerto Vallarta is such a gift. I shared a quick photo of my tostada on X because I just had to show people what they were missing!
Mid-Day Relaxation
Walking these hills in the sun can be exhausting. I decided to head back to a living area to cool off for a bit. The beauty of these condos is the mix of local art and modern comfort.

The natural light in these spaces is EVERYTHING. I spent about an hour just reading and enjoying the breeze. If you are working while traveling, these spaces are perfect. You get the local vibe of the neighborhood outside your door, but total peace and quiet inside.
The Afternoon Sweet Tooth
No foodie walk is complete without dessert. In 5 de Diciembre, there are several "panaderias" (bakeries) that pump out fresh bread all day. The smell of yeast and sugar is intoxicating.
I grabbed a "concha" and a small bag of local cookies. I didn't even make it back to the condo before I finished the concha. It was soft, sweet, and still warm.

Why 5 de Diciembre?
I LOVE this neighborhood because it doesn't try too hard. It’s just itself. When you are looking for puerto vallarta condo rentals, don't overlook this area. It is safe, walkable, and much more affordable for long-term stays.
If you are a digital nomad or a solo explorer, you will find your tribe here. You’ll find the shopkeepers who remember your name after two days. You’ll find the taco guy who knows exactly how much salsa you like. It’s a community.
Wrapping Up the Day
My solo foodie walk ended at the beach, watching the sunset. Playa Camarones is the main beach in this neighborhood, and it is beautiful. It’s less crowded than the beaches in Old Town, which makes it perfect for a quiet evening stroll.
If you are planning a trip, I highly recommend spending at least one full day just wandering 5 de Diciembre. Don't use a map. Just follow your nose. The food will lead you to the best spots.
Puerto Vallarta is a city that rewards the curious. Whether you are here for a week or a month, make sure you step outside the tourist bubbles. Go find that street cart. Go buy fruit from the lady on the corner.
I am so lucky to call this place home. Every time I do a walk like this, I fall in love with PV all over again. If you're ready to start your own adventure, check out our rentals in puerto vallarta and get your trip started!
5 de Diciembre is waiting for you. The tacos are hot, the beer is cold, and the people are the friendliest you'll ever meet.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
