I have spent a lot of time wandering the streets of Puerto Vallarta on my own.
There is something so peaceful about waking up early, grabbing a tote bag, and heading out before the rest of the world is fully awake.

It sits right at the top of Calle San Salvador. I usually start my walk from the bottom of the hill and work my way up.
The walk itself is part of the experience. You pass small bakeries where the smell of fresh bread hits you like a warm hug.
You see people heading to work, and everyone greets you with a friendly "Buenos días."

The Main Mercado Experience
The market building is a big, open concrete structure. It isn't fancy, and that is exactly why I like it.
When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the colors.
The fruit stalls are piled high with papayas, dragon fruit, and limes.
I always head to Frutería Hernández first. The vendors there are SOOO kind.
Even if your Spanish isn't perfect, they will help you out.
I’ve learned that you shouldn't just grab whatever looks good. If you ask them when you plan to eat an avocado, they will squeeze a few and pick the perfect one for you.
"Para hoy?" (For today?) they will ask.
If you say yes, they find you one that is buttery and ready to go.
It’s these little interactions that make solo travel feel less lonely. You start to feel like part of the neighborhood fabric.
The Best Catch in Town
If you are staying in puerto vallarta rentals old town or nearby, you probably have a great kitchen.
You HAVE to visit Pescadería Plazola inside the market.
It is widely known as the best fishmonger in the city.
The fish is caught fresh every single morning. I usually get a piece of mahi-mahi or some shrimp.
They will fillet it for you right there. They even offer to cube it if you tell them you are making ceviche at home.
I love taking my fresh catch back to my apartment and prepping a healthy lunch.
It feels so much more rewarding than just ordering takeout every day.
Beyond the Produce
The market isn't just about fruits and veggies.
There is a spot called Pollería Poly that has the most incredible homemade Oaxacan mole.
I bought a small jar of it once, and it changed my life. I’m not even kidding.
You can also find fresh tortillas at the local tortillería branch, La Hija del Maíz.
There is nothing quite like the smell of hot corn tortillas. I usually buy a small stack and eat one plain while I walk back.
It’s the simple things, right?
Why This is Perfect for Solo Travelers
When you travel solo, big touristy spots can sometimes feel overwhelming.
In the 5 de Diciembre market, nobody is trying to sell you a timeshare or a tour.
They are just selling good food to their neighbors.
It is a very respectful, quiet environment. You can take your time.
You can stand in front of a cheese stall for ten minutes trying to decide between panela or oaxaca cheese, and no one will rush you.
I often find myself stopping for a quick coffee at one of the small stands inside.
It’s a great place to people-watch and just exist in the moment.

- Bring Cash: Most of the vendors do not take cards. Small bills are even better.
- Go Early: The market is at its best between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Everything is fresh, and it isn't too hot yet.
- Bring Your Own Bag: It’s much easier to carry one big tote than five small plastic bags.
- Don't Be Afraid to Ask: The vendors are experts. If you don't know what a specific fruit is, just ask. They usually love to give you a little taste test!

After I finish my shopping, I usually take a different route back.
I might walk past the old cemetery, which is surprisingly beautiful and peaceful.
Or I might stop by a small hardware store if I need something for my place.
5 de Diciembre feels like a real town. It isn't polished for tourists, and that is its greatest charm.
The streets are steep, the houses are colorful, and the views of the ocean from the hills are UNBELIEVABLE.

This market is a huge part of why I love this city so much.
It’s about the quiet moments. The "buenos días," the smell of cilantro, and the heavy weight of a bag full of fresh limes.
It’s about taking care of yourself and enjoying the simple process of buying food.
