I woke up today and just knew I needed a break from my laptop. Being a puerto vallarta digital nomad is a dream, but sometimes the screen time gets to be a bit much. I love my workspace, but the jungle was calling my name.
I decided to head south to the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens. It is honestly one of my favorite places in the whole world. If you are a solo traveler looking for actual peace, this is the spot.
I grabbed my bag, some water, and my journal. I didn’t want a schedule. I didn't want a tour guide. I just wanted to be surrounded by green things and birds.
The ride out there is so beautiful. You pass all these amazing condos for rent in puerto vallarta that hug the coastline. The blue water on one side and the mountains on the other always makes me smile. It reminds me why I chose to live this life.
Finding My Zen
When I arrived, the air felt different. It was cooler and smelled like damp earth and flowers. Since I went early, it was incredibly quiet. There were no crowds, just the sound of the wind in the trees.
I started my morning with a little bit of a mindfulness walk. I read online that doing a self-led meditation in the garden is a great way to recharge. I found a quiet spot near some massive agaves and just sat.
I didn't check my phone once. I just listened. I could hear the river crashing way down below and the chirping of birds I couldn't even name. It was SOOO peaceful!!

Having a home base where I can come back to this kind of view is everything. When I rent apartments in puerto vallarta, I always look for that connection to nature. My place at Sueño has that same airy, open feeling that the gardens have.
A Photographer's Dream
After my meditation, I pulled out my camera. I am not a professional by any means, but the colors here make everyone look like an expert. The orchids are absolutely INSANE.
There is a whole conservatory dedicated to them. They have every color you can imagine. Deep purples, bright yellows, and soft pinks. I spent a good hour just trying to capture the way the light hit the petals.
Doing this solo is the best because you can take as long as you want. I didn't have to worry about anyone getting bored while I waited for the perfect shot. It’s the ultimate "main character" moment.
I highly recommend bringing a good camera or just making sure your phone is charged. You will want to remember these colors forever.

Walking the Hidden Trails
The garden has these amazing trails that lead down toward the river. I decided to take the "Jungle Trail" because I was feeling adventurous. It’s a bit of a hike, but it is so worth it.
The canopy of trees above is so thick that it feels like you're in a completely different world. I felt like an explorer. Every few steps, I’d see a giant butterfly or a lizard scurrying across the path.
I found a small wooden bridge and just stood there for a while. I thought about how much I love this city. If you've read my post Quiet Moments: My Solo Guide to 5 de Diciembre's Local Markets, you know I love the local vibe. But the gardens are a different kind of local magic.
It’s wild and untamed but also perfectly kept. It’s the perfect balance.
Reading by the River
Eventually, I made my way down to the Rio Los Horcones. The water was clear and cold. I found a big flat rock and pulled out my book.
This is my version of a perfect morning. Just me, the sound of the water, and a good story. I stayed there for a long time. It’s funny how time seems to slow down when you’re not staring at a clock or a Slack notification.
If you are looking for puerto vallarta apartments that put you close to this kind of serenity, The Nest is a great choice. It’s so important to have a quiet place to retreat to after a day of exploring.

I love looking at the mountains from my balcony. It reminds me of the trails I walked earlier. Puerto Vallarta really is the best of both worlds.
Why Solo is the Way to Go
I get asked a lot if I ever feel lonely traveling or exploring by myself. Honestly? Never. Especially not in places like this.
When you’re alone, you notice so much more. You notice the way the moss grows on the rocks. You notice the different scents of the wild ginger flowers. You can stop and talk to the gardeners, who are always so friendly and full of knowledge.
I also spent some time at the Hacienda de Oro. It’s the main building at the gardens. I sat on the balcony and watched the hummingbirds. They have dozens of feeders, and the birds are so used to people that they fly right past your head! It is AMAZING to see them so close.
I wrote a bit about finding these types of spots in my other blog, Solo Serenity: Finding Peace in the Hidden Corners of Gringo Gulch. There is just something about this city that invites reflection.

My Advice for Your Visit
If you’re planning to go, here are my top tips for solo travelers:
- Go Early: The gardens open at 9:00 AM. Being there right when they open means you get the trails to yourself.
- Bring Bug Spray: It is the jungle, after all! You’ll thank me later.
- Wear Good Shoes: Some of the trails are a bit steep and can be slippery if it rained recently.
- Pack a Journal: There are so many benches and quiet nooks. It’s the perfect place to get your thoughts down on paper.
- Stay Hydrated: Even in the shade, the humidity can get to you.
I ended my morning feeling completely refreshed. My brain felt quiet for the first time in weeks. I headed back to the city ready to tackle my work with a fresh perspective.
Final Thoughts
Puerto Vallarta is known for its nightlife and its beaches, but the Botanical Gardens are the true soul of the region. It’s a place where you can connect with the land and with yourself.
Whether you are here for a week or a year, you have to make the trip. It’s a short bus ride or taxi from the Old Town area, and it changes your whole mood.
I’m so grateful to have this place so close to where I stay. If you're looking for more tips on where to stay or what to do, check out our Instagram for more local favorites!
I can’t wait for my next "office day" to be followed by another escape like this. It makes the digital nomad life feel sustainable and truly special.
Highly recommended.
