There is something so special about a Friday morning in Puerto Vallarta. The weekend energy is starting to buzz. The sun is warm but not yet heavy. For me, Friday is my reset day. I’ve lived here long enough to know the secret spots where the city noise just… fades away.
Today, I decided to take my coffee and my laptop to the Cuale River Island. If you haven't been, it is a literal urban oasis. It sits right between the two sides of downtown. It divides the main city center from the Old Town.
I’m a huge fan of solo exploration. Being a puerto vallarta digital nomad means I get to choose my "office" every single day. Usually, I’m looking for somewhere with a breeze and a bit of soul. Isla Cuale has both in spades.

The Cuale River isn't always deep, but it’s always moving. In the morning, the water is clear and the birds are everywhere. I saw a white heron standing perfectly still on a rock. It didn't care about me at all. That’s the vibe here. Everything just slows down.
A Haven for the Solo Traveler
If you are traveling alone, this island is a dream. You never feel lonely because there is so much life around you. But you also don't feel crowded. It’s a place for reflection.
I found a small bench near the cultural center. I spent about an hour just watching the river flow. As a solo traveler, I value these quiet moments. They help me stay grounded. There are several pedestrian bridges that cross over to the island. My favorite is the "La Iguana" bridge. It’s a zig-zag bridge that connects the island to the Gringo Gulch area. Walking across it makes you feel like you're in a movie. The views of the white-walled houses on the hillside are SPECTACULAR.
The Workspace with a View

I found a small café on the island. They have tables right by the river’s edge. I ordered a fresh green juice and opened my laptop. Working with the sound of the river in the background is a total game-changer. It’s way better than any "coffee shop sounds" playlist.
I spent a few hours answering emails and writing. The island is great for this because there are no cars. No honking. Just the occasional sound of a broom sweeping the path or a distant birdcall. It’s the ultimate productivity hack.

Then, there are the iguanas. You have to look up! They love to sun themselves on the high branches of the trees. Some of them are HUGE. They look like little prehistoric dragons. Seeing them in the middle of the city is always a trip.
The island also has a small market area. Usually, I avoid markets when I’m in a "peaceful" mood, but the one on the island is different. It’s less aggressive than the ones on the main streets. You can find beautiful silver jewelry, colorful ceramics, and hand-woven bags. I bought a small ceramic bowl for my keys. It’s a nice little memory of my Friday.
Staying Close to the Magic

I walked back across one of the swinging footbridges. They bounce a little when you walk on them, which always makes me laugh. It’s like a little reminder not to take life too seriously.
I headed back to my place to relax for the afternoon. There is nothing like sitting on a balcony and looking out at the greenery you just explored.
Puerto Vallarta is full of these little pockets of peace. You just have to be willing to step off the main path. The Cuale River Island is a gem for anyone who needs a break from the hustle.
