It is Friday, March 27, 2026, and I am currently sitting with my feet up, staring at the most incredible view of the Sierra Madre mountains.
If you know me, you know I live for these quiet moments.
I have been coming to Puerto Vallarta for years, but today feels different.
I am a solo traveler who thrives on finding those tiny pockets of peace that most people walk right past.
Old Town is famous for its energy, its nightlife, and its incredible food.
But if you head just a few blocks up into the hills of the Zona Romantica, the world changes.
The sounds of the city fade into a hum, and the jungle starts to take over.
That is where I found my zen today.
The Magic of a Solo Friday
There is something special about a Friday morning when you are traveling alone.
The weekend crowd hasn't quite arrived yet.
The locals are sweeping their doorsteps and the smell of fresh coffee is everywhere.
I woke up early today because I wanted to beat the heat and find a spot I’d heard rumors about.
It’s a small, terraced garden tucked away on a steep slope.
As a solo traveler, I find that I notice things others don't.
I notice the way the light hits the hibiscus flowers and the way the birds talk to each other in the palms.

I counted five large, smooth river stones near the entrance of this garden.
It felt balanced.

The ocean is AMAZING.

You get the privacy.
And you get the views that make your heart skip a beat.

The side streets of the Zona Romantica are where the real soul of the city lives.
I found that my morning walk was the perfect way to clear my head.
I didn't check my phone once.
I didn't look at my emails.
I just breathed in the humid, floral air and enjoyed the quiet.
I highly recommend taking a small notebook with you.
I ended up writing three pages of thoughts just sitting on that garden bench.

After my garden retreat, I headed back to my home base.
Having a space that feels like yours is so important when you are traveling solo.

There is nothing worse than a dark, cramped room when you are in a tropical paradise.
My current spot has these massive glass doors that let the outside in.
I can see the mountains from my bed.
It makes the whole experience feel seamless.
You go from a secret garden in the hills to a modern, comfortable living space without losing that "zen" feeling.
Practical Tips for Your Hillside Adventure
If you decide to go exploring the hills of Old Town, here is what I suggest:
First, wear good shoes.
The cobblestones are charming, but they are also uneven and can be slippery.
Second, go early.
By 11:00 AM, the sun is strong, and the climb will feel much harder than it actually is.
Third, bring water.
There aren't many shops once you get deep into the residential parts of the hills.
But best of all, bring an open mind.
Some of the best gardens and views are hidden behind unassuming gates or at the end of dead-end streets.
I’ve found that the people living up here are incredibly friendly.
A simple "Buenos días" goes a long way.
It’s all part of the magic of living like a local.
