I have spent years exploring every corner of Puerto Vallarta, and I still think the south side has the best secrets.
Whenever I need to clear my head or just want a break from the laptop, I head straight to Amapas.
Living and working as a digital nomad here is AMAZING because you have the jungle on one side and the ocean on the other.
Today I want to share my favorite local walk that takes you from the edge of town into some of the most beautiful, quiet coves you have ever seen.
If you are a solo traveler or visiting as a couple, this is the perfect way to spend a morning without spending a dime.
It is easy, gorgeous, and feels like a total escape from the hustle of the city.
Starting Your Adventure in Amapas
I always start my mornings in the Amapas neighborhood because the vibe is so chill.
Amapas is tucked right between the busy Romantic Zone and the hills of the Sierra Madre.
To get to the trail, you just walk to the very south end of Playa Los Muertos.
You will see a big rocky point called El Púlpito sticking out into the water.
There is a set of stone stairs that leads you right over the top of the rocks.
I LOVE this part because as soon as you reach the top, the view of the bay opens up and you can see all the way to Mismaloya.
Once you walk down the other side of the stairs, you are on Playa Amapas.
This beach is much quieter than Los Muertos and is a great spot to just sit and watch the waves for a minute.
The Path to Conchas Chinas
Most people stop at Playa Amapas, but the real magic happens if you keep going south.
At the far end of the sand, look for a small concrete and rock path that hugs the shoreline.
This path is one of the best-kept secrets for anyone looking for puerto vallarta rentals by owner in this area.
It winds along the edge of the water, taking you past tiny hidden beaches and rocky tide pools.
I usually wear sturdy sandals for this because some parts can get a little splashy if the tide is high.
The water here is a brilliant turquoise color that looks like something out of a movie.
As you walk, you will pass through a series of small coves that make up Conchas Chinas.
Each cove feels like its own private paradise, especially if you get there early on a weekday.
It is so peaceful and romantic: I highly recommend it for couples who want some quiet time away from the crowds.

Why I Love the Amapas Vibe
The best thing about staying in this part of town is the balance.
You are close enough to walk to all the fun bars and restaurants, but far enough away to sleep in total silence.
I often talk to guests looking for condos for rent in puerto vallarta who want that "local" feel without being too far out in the jungle.
Amapas is exactly that.
You get these incredible mountain views and the sound of the ocean, but you can still grab a great coffee or a taco in five minutes.
If you are a solo traveler, it feels very safe and welcoming.
I actually wrote about a similar vibe in my post about Solo Sunday, where I explore the slower side of the neighborhood.
For those who want a bit more of a challenge, you can even head up into the hills for The View from Above, which is a hike that takes you higher into the Sierra Madre.
But for a daily walk, the coastal path to Conchas Chinas is my absolute favorite.
Fueling Up: Tacos and Coffee
You cannot go for a hike in Mexico without thinking about what you are going to eat afterward!
One of the reasons we love running The PVGirl as a family business is that we get to share our favorite local spots with you.
After my morning walk, I almost always stop at a local taco stand or a small cafe in Amapas.
There is nothing better than a fresh shrimp taco or a cold hibiscus water after being out in the sun.
The food here is authentic, fresh, and made with so much love.
I avoid the big tourist traps and stick to the places where I see my neighbors eating.
Supporting these local families is what makes our community so strong.

Making Amapas Your Home Base
If you are planning a trip, I really suggest looking at staying in this area.
Our property, Casa Vizcarra 2, is a fantastic choice if you want to be right in the heart of this "best of both worlds" location.
It is perfect for couples who want comfort and a local feel.
Another great option for those looking for modern condos for rent in puerto vallarta is Casa CC, which offers amazing views and easy access to these trails.
We love greeting our guests and showing them exactly where these hidden paths start.
Personalized service is our thing: we want you to feel like you have a friend in the city!
Whether you are here for a week of vacation or staying for a month to work remotely, the Amapas trails will become your favorite ritual.

Practical Tips for the Hike
- Time it right: Go before 10:00 AM to avoid the midday heat.
- Footwear: Sandals with a back strap or sneakers are better than flip-flops for the rocky bits.
- Water: Bring a bottle! There are no shops once you get onto the coastal path until you reach the far end of Conchas Chinas.
- The Return: You can walk back the way you came, or walk up to the highway in Conchas Chinas and grab a quick Uber or bus back to the center.
I promise you, once you see those hidden coves, you will fall in love with Puerto Vallarta all over again.
It is the perfect mix of nature and neighborhood.
