We absolutely LOVE living in Puerto Vallarta, and if you ask us, there is no place more magical than the Amapas neighborhood. We have spent years exploring every corner of this city, but the way the jungle literally tumbles down into the ocean here is something you just have to see to believe!!
Amapas is that perfect sweet spot. It sits right on the edge of the vibrant Zona Romantica, but it feels like a total world away. If you are looking for the best neighborhoods to stay in Puerto Vallarta, you really cannot beat the natural beauty and peace you find on these hillsides.
We always tell our guests that staying here isn't just about having a place to sleep. It is about waking up to the sound of tropical birds and seeing the thick green leaves of the Sierra Madre right outside your window. It is nature at its absolute BEST!
The Lush Green Backdrop
One of the first things you will notice when you arrive is the color. Everything is SOOO green!
The Sierra Madre mountains form a dramatic wall behind the neighborhood. In the rainy season, it looks like a literal emerald forest. Even in the drier months, the massive Parota trees and ancient palms stay vibrant and full of life.
We love taking walks through the winding streets of Amapas just to look at the plants. You will see wild hibiscus, bright ginger flowers, and vines that look like they belong in a movie. It is like living inside a botanical garden, but with the ocean as your front yard!
Hiking the Coastal Path
If you are like us and love a good walk, the coastal path is a total MUST. You can start right at the southern end of Los Muertos beach.
There is a rocky headland called "El Púlpito" that separates the main tourist beach from the more secluded areas. We love walking over the stone steps here. It is one of our favorite spots for A Romantic Stroll because it feels so private and wild.
As you walk, keep your eyes on the rocks! We always see dozens of crabs scuttling around and huge iguanas soaking up the midday sun. They are totally harmless and so cool to watch.
Finding Solitude at Playa Amapas
Once you cross over El Púlpito, you find Playa Amapas. This is not your typical tourist beach.
There are no massive high-rises or loud music here. Instead, you get a small, golden-sand cove protected by the rocks. It is much quieter than the main beach, which makes it a dream for a puerto vallarta digital nomad who needs a break from the screen.
We highly recommend bringing a towel and just sitting under the shade of the trees. The water is usually very clear here because it is sheltered from the heavy surf. It is the perfect place to just breathe and listen to the waves hitting the rocks.
Snorkeling and Marine Life
The nature in Amapas isn't just on land. It is underwater too!
The rocky sections of Playa Amapas are home to so much marine life. If you bring a snorkel mask, you can see schools of bright yellow King Angelfish and Sergeant Majors right near the shore.
We have even seen small rays and octopuses hiding in the crevices of the rocks. It is amazing how much biodiversity is tucked away just a few minutes from the city center. We never get tired of seeing what we can find in the tide pools!
Birdwatching from Your Balcony

We often spend our mornings on the balcony with a coffee, just watching the sky. You will see massive Pelicans diving for fish in the bay and Frigatebirds circling high above.
But our favorites are the colorful land birds. We see bright yellow Orioles and cheeky Grackles every single day. If you are lucky, you might even spot a Military Macaw flying over from the deeper jungle. Their bright green feathers are unmistakable!!

The lack of big crowds makes it feel like your own little secret. It is quiet, it is beautiful, and it is incredibly relaxing. We always recommend it to our friends who want a peaceful getaway without losing the local vibe.

- Bring Water: It gets humid in the trees! Always have a bottle with you.
- Respect the Wildlife: We share this neighborhood with iguanas, coatis, and more. Let them do their thing and just enjoy the view!
