I have lived in Puerto Vallarta for a long time now. My family and I know every corner of this beautiful bay. But if you ask me which neighborhood feels the most special for a solo explorer, it is definitely Amapas.
Amapas is like the quiet, cool cousin of the busy Zona Romántica. It sits just above the main tourist areas. You get all the convenience of being close to the action, but with the peace of the hills. It is truly one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Puerto Vallarta if you want a real local vibe.
When I go for my morning walks, I don’t just stick to the main road. I head into the winding streets and the steep staircases that connect the hills to the ocean. This is where the magic happens! You see the local life unfolding before the city even fully wakes up.
The Hillside Hustle
If you want a workout that beats any gym, just follow the stairs! Amapas is built on a cliffside. There are dozens of hidden pedestrian paths that zig-zag between the colorful villas. I LOVE walking these early in the day.
You get to see the city from a different angle every few steps. One moment you are looking at a giant palm tree, and the next, you have a clear view of the blue water. It is so peaceful and quiet. You might only pass a local gardener or a neighbor walking their dog.
These paths are the "secret" ways to get around. If you are staying in one of our puerto vallarta rentals by owner, you will quickly learn which stairs lead straight down to the sand. It is much better than taking the long way around!
Hidden Beaches and Tide Pools
Most tourists stop at Los Muertos beach. It is fun, but it can be very crowded. If you are like me and want some "me time," you have to go a little further south.
Just a short walk from the main Amapas area is Conchas Chinas. This is my favorite spot for a morning dip! The rock formations there create these AMAZING natural tide pools. The water is crystal clear and calm.
I often bring a book and just sit by the pools for hours. It is the perfect place for a puerto vallarta digital nomad to clear their head after a long zoom call. There are no loud music or big crowds here: just the sound of the waves.
Working from "The Hill"
Being a nomad in PV is a dream. But you need the right setup. I found that Amapas offers the perfect balance. You have the fast internet and comfort of modern condos for rent in puerto vallarta, but you also have the inspiration of the view.
When I need a change of scenery from my desk at The PVGirl properties, I walk down into the flat part of the neighborhood. There is a great spot called "A Page in the Sun." It is a cafe and bookstore where many nomads hang out.

Authentic Eats You Can't Miss
I always tell our guests: don't just eat at the beach clubs! The best food is often tucked away on a side street.
In Amapas and the surrounding area, there are small taco stands that locals have used for years. These aren't fancy, but the food is SOOO good. Look for the stands with the most people: that is the secret!
I highly recommend trying the tacos al pastor at a local stand rather than a sit-down restaurant. The flavors are much more authentic. Plus, it is a great way to support the local family businesses that make our city so special.

The "Real" Local Hike
If you are feeling adventurous, take the local bus south to Boca de Tomatlán. It only takes about 15 minutes. From there, you can hike the coastal trail.
This trail is BEAUTIFUL. It leads you through the jungle to small, hidden beaches like Colomitos. This is where I go when I want to feel completely disconnected from the world.
The hike isn't too hard, but you should bring plenty of water. Most tourists never make it this far, so you will often have the trail to yourself. It is the ultimate off-the-beaten-path experience.
