We absolutely love the energy of the Romantic Zone, but sometimes you just want a little peace and quiet without being miles away from the action. That is where Amapas comes in. It is one of our favorite neighborhoods for couples and digital nomads who want the best of both worlds.
I have spent so much time exploring these hills, and let me tell you, the views here are second to none. You are high enough to see the entire curve of Banderas Bay, but close enough to hear the waves crashing on Los Muertos Beach. It is pure magic.
But there is a catch. The hills in Amapas are no joke!
The Trade-Off: Hills vs. Scenery
If you are looking for puerto vallarta apartments, you have probably noticed that Amapas is situated on a steep hillside. Some people see the steep streets and get a little worried. I get it! It is a serious workout for your calves.
But here is why we think it is totally worth it. The higher you go, the quieter it gets. You leave the honking taxis and the late-night music behind. Up here, it is just you, the ocean breeze, and the sound of tropical birds in the jungle.
Plus, you can always catch a quick Uber or taxi if you aren't in the mood for a climb. We do it all the time! It is a small price to pay for having a front-row seat to the most beautiful coastline in Mexico.

Morning Coffee with a Million-Dollar View
For us, the best part of living in Amapas is the morning routine. There is nothing like waking up, brewing a fresh pot of local Mexican coffee, and sitting on the balcony.
The light hitting the water in the middle of the day is stunning. The blues are so deep and vibrant! We often see whales jumping in the distance during the winter months. You just don't get that perspective when you are staying on the flat ground.
If you are a digital nomad, this is the ultimate office. I find myself getting so much more done when I can look up from my laptop and see the horizon. It beats a cubicle any day of the week!
For a great example of what I mean, you should check out our puerto vallarta apartments at Casa Vizcarra 2. The windows are huge and the light is just incredible.
Exploring the Neighborhood
Even though you are on the hillside, you are never far from the essentials. A quick five-minute walk down the hill (which is much easier than the walk up!) lands you right in the heart of the food scene.
We are obsessed with the local taco stands nearby. There is nothing better than a fresh Al Pastor taco after a long day of working or exploring. The colors, the smells, the friendly faces: it is the authentic Puerto Vallarta experience we always talk about.

Beach Days are Just Steps Away
Amapas is technically "Upper" and "Lower." If you stay in Lower Amapas, you are literally steps away from Los Muertos Beach. This is the most famous beach in town, and for a good reason. It is lively, fun, and perfect for a day in the sun.
We love grabbing a couple of chairs, ordering some fresh ceviche, and just watching the world go by. The water is warm, and the vibe is always upbeat. Since Amapas is right next door, you can be back in your quiet sanctuary in minutes when you've had enough sun.
If you want to stay right in the mix of things, our condos for rent in puerto vallarta at Casa CC are a fantastic option. They put you in a great spot to enjoy everything the area has to offer.
Why Couples LOVE Amapas
Amapas is easily one of the most romantic spots in the city. Because it is a bit more residential and tucked away, it feels very private. We see so many couples enjoying quiet dinners on their balconies or taking slow walks through the winding streets.
It is the perfect home base. You can head down to the Romantic Zone for a world-class dinner at a local restaurant, enjoy some drinks, and then retreat to your peaceful hillside condo. It feels like your own private escape.

Local Eats and Hidden Gems
Speaking of food, the restaurant scene near Amapas is amazing. We always recommend trying the smaller, family-run spots. You get better food and you are supporting the local community, which is so important to us at The PVGirl.
There are some incredible little cafes where you can grab a quick breakfast or a midday snack. We love the vibrant colors and the lush greenery that surrounds these patios. It really makes you feel like you are in a tropical paradise.
Tips for Your Amapas Stay
If you are planning to stay in this part of town, here are a few tips from our personal experience:
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: Those cobblestones are charming, but they can be tricky! Leave the heels at home and stick to sturdy sandals or sneakers.
- Download Uber: It is very affordable and saves your legs when you've had a long day of exploring.
- Hydrate: The humidity is real! Always keep a bottle of water with you, especially for the walk back up the hill.
- Camera Ready: You will want to take photos every five minutes. The views really are that good!
We have written a lot about the different vibes in town. If you want to read more about the mountain views around here, check out The View from Above: A Solo Traveler's Guide to Puerto Vallarta's Mountain Magic.

Final Thoughts
Amapas isn't for everyone. If you absolutely hate hills and want to be on flat ground 24/7, you might prefer staying right on the beach in the hotel zone. But if you want character, peace, and views that will take your breath away, this is the place to be.
We truly believe that the walk is worth it. Every time we step out onto a balcony in Amapas and see that deep blue water, we remember why we fell in love with Puerto Vallarta in the first place.
