Living in Puerto Vallarta has taught me one thing: every neighborhood has its own heartbeat. If you want a mix of jungle peace and quick access to the action, Amapas is where you want to be.
Our family has been here for generations, and we’ve seen Amapas grow into one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Puerto Vallarta. It’s tucked just south of Old Town, but it feels like a completely different world. It’s quiet, it’s green, and the views are absolutely UNBELIEVABLE!
But if you’re staying here for the first time, there’s a bit of a learning curve. Navigating these winding hillside streets takes a little local know-how. Whether you’re here for a romantic getaway or you're a puerto vallarta digital nomad looking for a quiet workspace, I’ve got you covered.
The "Hills" Reality: Leg Day Every Day
Let’s be real: Amapas is steep. That’s why the views are so GOOD! But it means you need to plan your movements.
My best advice? Walk down, but Uber up.
Walking down from your rental to the beach is a breeze. You get to see the colorful villas and the bougainvillea spilling over the walls. It’s the perfect way to start your day. But after a long day in the sun or a big dinner in Old Town, that walk back up can be a challenge.
Ubers and taxis are everywhere and super reliable. They know these hills like the back of their hand. It’s a quick, easy way to get back to your serenity without breaking a sweat. If you are a solo traveller, it’s also the most comfortable way to get around after dark.

The Secret Shortcut: El Púlpito Stairs
If you want to feel like a real local, you have to find the "secret" stairs. At the very south end of Los Muertos Beach, right where the sand hits the rocks, there’s a concrete staircase built into the cliff. This is El Púlpito.
You climb up those stairs, walk over the ridge, and BOOM: you’re at Playa Amapas. It’s a much quieter, more secluded cove than the main beach. It’s my favorite spot for some Mindful Mornings away from the crowds.
From Playa Amapas, there’s a beautiful coastal path that keeps going south toward Conchas Chinas. It’s mostly flat once you’re off the stairs and the scenery is just stunning. You’ll see tide pools, crashing waves, and maybe even a few local fishermen. Just make sure you wear sturdy sandals! Those rocks can be slippery.
Staying in the Heart of the Hill

Old Town is Just a Stones Throw Away
The best part about Amapas? You’re only a 10 or 15-minute walk from the heart of the Romantic Zone. We treat Amapas and Old Town as basically the same neighborhood because they are so connected.
You can spend your afternoon exploring the galleries and shops in Old Town, then retreat back to the hillside for a quiet evening. It’s the best of both worlds! Many of our guests love puerto vallarta rentals old town because they want to be near the restaurants, but Amapas gives you that extra layer of peace.
I always tell my friends to head into town for the local taco stands. There is nothing like a late-night street taco after a day of exploring. The energy in Old Town is infectious, but coming home to the hillside serenity of Amapas is the best feeling in the world.
Practical Tips for Your Amapas Stay
Before you pack your bags, here are a few quick tips to make your stay smooth:
- Footwear: Leave the high heels at home. The cobblestones and hills are no joke. A good pair of walking sandals or sneakers will be your best friend.
- Hydration: It gets humid! Always carry a bottle of water, especially if you’re doing the climb.
- Uber App: Make sure your app is updated and ready to go. It’s the easiest way to navigate the neighborhood.
- Groceries: There are several small local markets nearby for the basics, but for a big shop, you’ll want to head into the center of town.
We are so grateful to be able to share our home with you. Puerto Vallarta is a magical place, and Amapas is its crown jewel. If you’re looking for an authentic experience that feels personal and local, you’ve found it.
