We are Puerto Vallarta locals, born and raised here, and we have spent years walking Amapas from the beach up into the hills. We know the shortcuts, the steep spots, the best viewpoints, and the places worth slowing down for.<\/p>\n

Amapas is one of our favorite neighborhoods for couples and digital nomads. It feels peaceful and green, but the beach, caf\u00e9s, galleries, and local food of Zona Rom\u00e1ntica are still close by.<\/p>\n

The secret is to explore it on foot. You notice much more when you walk slowly.<\/p>\n

What Amapas feels like on foot<\/h2>\n

Amapas climbs the hillside just south of Zona Rom\u00e1ntica. The streets are residential, tropical, and wonderfully different from the busier areas closer to the water.<\/p>\n

Expect cobblestones, uneven sidewalks, narrow lanes, and plenty of stairs. This is not a flat walking route. It is a moderate adventure with short climbs, cool pauses, and beautiful bay views along the way.<\/p>\n

For us, that is part of the charm.<\/p>\n

You may pass bright walls, leafy gardens, small apartment buildings, and quiet corners where the Sierra Madre greenery seems to take over. Please remember that Amapas is also a real neighborhood. We keep our voices low, avoid photographing private homes, and give cars plenty of space on narrow streets.<\/p>\n

Our favorite walking route for two<\/h2>\n

This route takes about 60 to 90 minutes without long stops. Add more time if you want to swim, sit at the beach, or stop for food.<\/p>\n

1. Start near Los Muertos Beach<\/h3>\n

We like to begin near the southern end of Los Muertos Beach or close to the pier. It is an easy place to get oriented before heading uphill.<\/p>\n

Take a few minutes to enjoy the water and watch the local rhythm around you. Then walk inland toward the lower streets of Zona Rom\u00e1ntica.<\/p>\n

This is a good place to grab water or a coffee before the climb. Once you start heading into Amapas, shops become less frequent.<\/p>\n

2. Walk toward Calle Amapas<\/h3>\n

From the lower streets, make your way toward Calle Amapas. You can use the main road or choose one of the pedestrian stairways that rise from the neighborhood below.<\/p>\n

We usually recommend starting with the gentler route if it is your first visit. Save the steeper stairways for the way back down or for another walk.<\/p>\n

Go at your own pace. One person can lead while the other checks the map. Then switch. It turns the climb into a shared experience instead of a race.<\/p>\n

3. Pause at every landing<\/h3>\n

The best views are not always at a famous lookout. Sometimes they appear between buildings or at a small landing halfway up a stairway.<\/p>\n

Stop when the bay opens in front of you. Look for the contrast between the bright blue water, green hills, colorful homes, and low-rise buildings below.<\/p>\n

This is also where Amapas becomes especially romantic. You are moving together, but you are not rushing. There is time to talk, take photos, and enjoy the breeze.<\/p>\n

4. Wander the upper residential streets<\/h3>\n

Once you reach the higher part of Amapas, slow down even more.<\/p>\n

Walk along the quieter streets and notice the mix of tropical plants, local details, and hillside architecture. You do not need a strict itinerary here. The pleasure comes from turning onto a new street and seeing where it leads.<\/p>\n

Still, keep your map open. Amapas can feel simple when you are walking uphill, but the streets do not always connect in the way you expect.<\/p>\n
