The main hub is the Mercado Municipal in 5 de Diciembre. <\/p>\n

It sits right at the top of Calle San Salvador. I usually start my walk from the bottom of the hill and work my way up. <\/p>\n

The walk itself is part of the experience. You pass small bakeries where the smell of fresh bread hits you like a warm hug. <\/p>\n

You see people heading to work, and everyone greets you with a friendly "Buenos d\u00edas." <\/p>\n

I always head to Fruter\u00eda Hern\u00e1ndez first. The vendors there are SOOO kind. <\/p>\n

Even if your Spanish isn't perfect, they will help you out. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned that you shouldn't just grab whatever looks good. If you ask them when you plan to eat an avocado, they will squeeze a few and pick the perfect one for you. <\/p>\n

"Para hoy?" (For today?) they will ask. <\/p>\n

If you say yes, they find you one that is buttery and ready to go. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s these little interactions that make solo travel feel less lonely. You start to feel like part of the neighborhood fabric. <\/p>\n

The Best Catch in Town<\/h2>\n

You HAVE to visit Pescader\u00eda Plazola inside the market. <\/p>\n

It is widely known as the best fishmonger in the city. <\/p>\n

The fish is caught fresh every single morning. I usually get a piece of mahi-mahi or some shrimp. <\/p>\n

They will fillet it for you right there. They even offer to cube it if you tell them you are making ceviche at home. <\/p>\n

I love taking my fresh catch back to my apartment and prepping a healthy lunch. <\/p>\n

It feels so much more rewarding than just ordering takeout every day. <\/p>\n

Beyond the Produce<\/h2>\n

The market isn't just about fruits and veggies. <\/p>\n

There is a spot called Poller\u00eda Poly that has the most incredible homemade Oaxacan mole. <\/p>\n

I bought a small jar of it once, and it changed my life. I\u2019m not even kidding. <\/p>\n

You can also find fresh tortillas at the local tortiller\u00eda branch, La Hija del Ma\u00edz. <\/p>\n

There is nothing quite like the smell of hot corn tortillas. I usually buy a small stack and eat one plain while I walk back. <\/p>\n

Why This is Perfect for Solo Travelers<\/h2>\n

When you travel solo, big touristy spots can sometimes feel overwhelming. <\/p>\n

In the 5 de Diciembre market, nobody is trying to sell you a timeshare or a tour. <\/p>\n

They are just selling good food to their neighbors. <\/p>\n

It is a very respectful, quiet environment. You can take your time. <\/p>\n

You can stand in front of a cheese stall for ten minutes trying to decide between panela or oaxaca cheese, and no one will rush you. <\/p>\n

I often find myself stopping for a quick coffee at one of the small stands inside. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great place to people-watch and just exist in the moment. <\/p>\n
