Puerto Vallarta is not just one big tourist zone. Every area has its own soul! Some are busy and loud, others are quiet and leafy. In this guide, I am going to share my insider secrets. Many people just book a big resort and stay there the whole time. That is such a missed opportunity! To really feel the magic of PV, you need to be out in the neighborhoods. You want to walk to the local bakery in the morning. You want to hear the sound of the ocean and the church bells.<\/p>\n

I have a huge soft spot for 5 de Diciembre. This is where you go if you want to live like a local. It is just north of the city center, and it is SOOO charming!<\/p>\n

The streets here are steep, which means the views are AMAZING. You can look right out over the Bay of Banderas. It is a mix of traditional homes and cool new spots. You will see local families out on their porches and kids playing in the streets (but don't worry, our rentals are nice and quiet!).<\/p>\n

One of my favorite things to do here is visit the local market. You can find the freshest fruit you have ever seen! The colors are so bright and the smells are incredible.<\/p>\n

Staying in 5 de Diciembre means you are close to the beach but away from the massive crowds. It is perfect for couples who want to wander through real neighborhoods. You can find the best street tacos here, too! We always tell our guests exactly which stand has the best carnitas.<\/p>\n

Zona Rom\u00e1ntica & Old Town: The Heart of it All<\/h2>\n

Now, we have to talk about Zona Rom\u00e1ntica and Old Town. We treat these as the same neighborhood because they share the same vibrant energy! This is the most famous part of PV for a reason.<\/p>\n

It is full of life, color, and romance. The buildings are all low-rise, which keeps that cozy, old-world feel. You won't find giant skyscrapers here! Instead, you find narrow streets, hidden cafes, and beautiful galleries.<\/p>\n

This area is perfect for couples who want everything at their fingertips. You can walk to the beach in five minutes. You can have a world-class dinner and then a moonlit stroll on the pier. It is very social and very friendly.<\/p>\n

Gringo Gulch: History and Views<\/h2>\n

It is famous for being the place where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton lived. You can feel that old Hollywood glamour in the air! The streets are all cobblestone and very hilly.<\/p>\n

It is much quieter than the beach areas. You are surrounded by lush green jungle and white-washed walls covered in pink bougainvillea. It is the perfect spot for a quiet morning coffee while looking at the cathedral.<\/p>\n

Walking down into town from Gringo Gulch is easy and beautiful. Walking back up is a bit of a workout, but it keeps you fit! The views from the top are worth every step. I highly recommend taking a walk through here even if you don't stay in the area.<\/p>\n

Why We Love Local Rentals<\/h2>\n

Choosing where to stay is also about how<\/em> you stay. We believe that family-run rentals are the way to go. Big agencies can feel very cold and professional. We like to keep things personal!<\/p>\n
