We absolutely LOVE exploring the winding streets and hidden gems of Puerto Vallarta! After spending so much time here, we can honestly say that the best way to see the city is from above. There is just something so special about looking down at the red-tiled roofs and the sparkling blue water of Banderas Bay. If you are looking for a romantic adventure that gets your heart pumping, you HAVE to hike up to the Mirador de la Cruz.
It is one of our absolute favorite things to do. We try to make the trek at least once every time we visit. It is short, it is steep, and the payoff is AMAZING!! Seriously, the views from the top will take your breath away (if the stairs didn't already!).
Finding the Path Together
The hike starts right in the heart of downtown, not far from where many of our guests stay in various puerto vallarta vacation condos. To get there, you just head to the Malecon and find Abasolo Street. It is the street that runs right up the hill toward the big white cross you can see from the shore.
We usually start our walk with a coffee in hand, enjoying the morning air before it gets too hot. Walking through the lower parts of the neighborhood is so charming. You see locals sweeping their porches and colorful bougainvillea spilling over the walls. It feels like the real Mexico.
As you start heading up, the road gets steeper. This isn't just a leisurely stroll! It is a real workout. But don't worry, if you are a couple who loves a little bit of activity, you will have so much fun together. We always find ourselves laughing as we huff and puff our way up the cobblestones.

The Climb to the Cross
Once you get past the paved streets, you hit the stairs. There are A LOT of stairs. Some people call this the "Stairway to Heaven," and it definitely feels like it! The path has been improved recently, so there are sturdy handrails and wide steps, but it is still quite a climb.
We like to take breaks at the landings. It is the perfect excuse to stop, catch our breath, and sneak a quick kiss while looking out at the ocean getting further and further away. You’ll see fitness enthusiasts running up and down, but there’s no rush for us. We are here for the romance and the scenery!
The best part about this hike is that it only takes about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the top. It is the perfect "quick hit" of nature and exercise before heading back down for a delicious brunch or a day at the beach.
The View from the Top
When you finally reach the summit, everything changes. The noise of the city fades away, and you are standing on a massive observation deck with a 360-degree view of the entire region. You can see all the way from the north end of the bay down to the lush jungle mountains in the south.
It is SOOO beautiful! We could spend hours up there just pointing out the different landmarks. You can see the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the cruise ships docked in the distance, and the rows of zona romantica puerto vallarta rentals lining the hillsides.
If you go during sunset, be prepared for some serious magic. The sky turns shades of pink and orange that don't even look real. It is the ultimate spot for a couple’s selfie. We highly recommend bringing a bottle of water (or maybe even a hidden snack) to enjoy while you soak it all in.

Relaxing After the Hike
After you’ve finished your descent: which is much easier on the legs but can be a bit slippery on the cobblestones!: you’ll probably want a place to relax. We always dream of heading back to a comfortable, cool space.
If you are looking for the perfect home base, we have some incredible options. For those who want to be right in the mix of the city while still having a quiet sanctuary, we love the apartments for rent in puerto vallarta at the Hummingbird property. It is stylish, cozy, and perfect for two people who want to explore the town.
Another amazing choice is the Opportunity building. These puerto vallarta rentals by owner offer that authentic local feel with all the modern comforts you need. After a hike like the Mirador, there is nothing better than kicking off your shoes and relaxing in a bright, airy living room.
Making the Most of Your Romantic Getaway
Puerto Vallarta is such a special place for couples. Whether you are celebrating an anniversary or just need a break from the "real world," this city delivers. Beyond the hiking, there are so many ways to connect.
We often follow up our morning hikes with a trip to one of the local spots for a drink. If you are into something a bit more sophisticated than a beach bucket of beers, you should definitely check out our guide to Our Favorite Hidden Wine Bars. There is one tucked away in the Old Town that we absolutely adore for a post-hike glass of chilled white wine.

The key to a great trip here is balancing the adventure with the relaxation. We love the "slow travel" vibe: hiking in the morning, napping in the afternoon, and then wandering the streets for dinner.
What to Bring for Your Hike
To make sure your trip to the Mirador is a success, here are a few things we always recommend:
- Good Shoes: Don't try to do this in flip-flops! The cobblestones can be uneven and the stairs are steep. Wear sneakers with good grip.
- Water: Even if it's a short hike, the humidity in PV is no joke. You will be sweating!
- A Camera: Obviously! You will want to capture those views.
- Go Early or Late: Avoid the midday sun. It gets very hot on those stairs between 12 PM and 4 PM. Early morning is peaceful, and sunset is romantic.
We have seen so many couples get engaged at the top of the Mirador, and we totally get why. It feels like you are on top of the world. Even if you aren't planning a proposal, it is a memory you will cherish forever.

Final Thoughts on the Mirador
If you are visiting Puerto Vallarta, the Mirador de la Cruz is a must-do. It is free, it is healthy, and it provides the best perspective of this beautiful city we call home. We feel so lucky to be able to share these experiences with our guests and friends.
Don't forget to follow our official Facebook page for more updates, local tips, and photos of the amazing views we find every day. We are always posting about our favorite spots and new discoveries in the neighborhood!
We really hope you enjoy the hike as much as we do. It is challenging, it is rewarding, and it is BEST of all shared with someone you love. Puerto Vallarta is waiting for you!
