There's something magical about wandering through Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone on a Friday evening when the galleries throw open their doors.
My partner and I discovered the South Side Shuffle a few months back. We were looking for something different to do. Something more than just dinner and drinks.
We found it.
When Art Meets Romance
The South Side Shuffle happens every other Friday from 6 to 9 PM. It's concentrated along Basilio Badillo Street and the surrounding cobblestone lanes of the Zona Romántica.
Twenty-two galleries, jewelry stores, and boutiques participate. That's a lot of art to see in one evening.
But here's the thing – you don't have to rush. We never do.
The beauty of this experience is in the strolling. In taking your time. In letting the evening unfold naturally as you move from one gallery to the next with your favorite person.

The Atmosphere is Everything
The Romantic Zone transforms as the sun sets.
The cobblestone streets catch the warm glow of street lamps. Musicians set up on corners. The whole neighborhood takes on this dreamy, intimate quality that's PERFECT for couples.
We usually start around 6:30 PM. Early enough to avoid the biggest crowds but late enough that the evening energy has kicked in.
Most galleries offer complimentary wine. Some have live music spilling out onto the sidewalks. Others feature the artists themselves, standing next to their work, ready to chat about their creative process.
That personal connection makes all the difference.
Meeting the Artists
One of my favorite parts is talking directly with the artists.
Last time we went, we spent twenty minutes chatting with a sculptor from Guadalajara. He explained how he works with recycled metal to create these incredible ocean-inspired pieces.
My partner loved hearing about his process. I loved watching her light up as she asked questions about technique and inspiration.
These conversations happen naturally during the ArtWalk. Artists are accessible. Friendly. Genuinely excited to share their stories.
You're not just looking at art on a wall. You're connecting with the people who created it.

The Galleries We Love
Basilio Badillo Street is the main artery. Start there and you'll find most of the participating venues within a few blocks.
Each gallery has its own personality. Some focus on traditional Mexican folk art. Others showcase contemporary paintings and photography. There are jewelry boutiques with handcrafted silver pieces.
We don't have favorites exactly. Part of the fun is discovering something new each time.
But we do always make time for the smaller, more intimate spaces. The ones tucked down side streets where you might be the only couple browsing.
Those quiet moments – just the two of you, surrounded by beautiful art, soft music playing in the background – that's romance right there.
Beyond the Galleries
Here's what makes the South Side Shuffle special: the entire neighborhood participates.
Restaurants set up special menus for ArtWalk nights. Bars offer signature cocktails. Street performers juggle and dance at key intersections.
The whole Zona Romántica becomes this vibrant, creative celebration.
We usually plan to grab dinner before or after the walk. There are incredible restaurants throughout the neighborhood. Many within steps of the gallery route.
Last time, we stopped at a rooftop bar (not at our puerto vallarta rentals, just around the corner!) and watched the sunset over the bay before diving into the galleries.
The combination of art, food, music, and that beautiful coastal setting creates an unforgettable date night.

Making It Your Own
Every couple experiences the ArtWalk differently.
Some like to hit every single gallery. They're on a mission to see everything.
Others – like us – prefer a more relaxed approach. We pick five or six galleries that look interesting. We take our time. We sit on a bench in the plaza and people-watch between stops.
There's no wrong way to do it.
Wear comfortable shoes. The cobblestones are charming but not super friendly to heels. Bring a small bag if you think you might buy something.
And leave room in your schedule to wander off the main route. Some of the best discoveries happen when you follow your curiosity down a quiet side street.
The Wednesday Alternative
If you can't make it to the South Side Shuffle, Puerto Vallarta also hosts the Historic Center Art Walk every Wednesday evening from 6 to 10 PM.
This one takes place in the downtown Centro Histórico District. Fifteen major galleries participate. It's been running for 29 consecutive seasons, so they've really perfected the experience.
The vibe is similar – free wine, artist meet-and-greets, beautiful evening atmosphere.
We've done both. They're equally special in different ways.
The Wednesday walk feels slightly more formal. The galleries are positioned close together, so you can cover more ground. The Friday South Side Shuffle has a more laid-back, neighborhood feel.
For couples staying in puerto vallarta vacation rentals in the Romantic Zone, the Friday walk is practically at your doorstep.
Perfect Date Night Details
Arrive between 6 and 7 PM to beat the crowds. Galleries get busier as the evening progresses.
Start at the southern end of Basilio Badillo and work your way north. Or vice versa. Either direction works.
Hold hands. Take photos. Don't feel pressured to buy anything unless something truly speaks to you.
Gallery owners and artists appreciate genuine interest more than purchases. Though if you do fall in love with a piece, buying directly from the artist during the ArtWalk is special.

Why We Keep Coming Back
We've attended the South Side Shuffle at least six times now. Maybe more.
It never gets old.
Each time, there are new artists. Different pieces on display. Fresh perspectives to discover together.
And honestly? It's just a beautiful way to spend an evening with someone you care about.
Walking through the Romantic Zone. Sipping wine in candlelit galleries. Discussing which paintings resonate with you and why. Discovering that your partner sees something completely different in the same piece.
These small moments of connection – that's what travel memories are made of.
Photography and the Evening Light
The Romantic Zone is incredibly photogenic during the ArtWalk.
The combination of gallery lighting spilling onto the streets, the warm glow from restaurants, and the cobblestone textures creates this perfect golden-hour-into-twilight aesthetic.
We always take photos. Not obsessively. Just enough to capture the mood.
The colorful buildings, the art-filled windows, the intimate street scenes – it all photographs beautifully. Your Instagram will thank you.
But remember to put the phone down too. Be present. This is one of those experiences that's better lived than documented.
Our Recommendation
If you're looking for a romantic, culturally enriching activity in Puerto Vallarta, the South Side Shuffle is highly recommended.
It's free to attend. It's easy to navigate. And it offers something most beach destinations don't – a genuine connection to the local arts community.
Whether you're art enthusiasts or just curious beginners, you'll find something to love.
The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. The art is a beautiful bonus.
