We have spent years exploring Puerto Vallarta, and Amapas remains one of our favorite neighborhoods for big views, quiet walks, and local atmosphere.

The best part is that you do not need a complicated tour. A comfortable pair of shoes, a bottle of water, and a few open hours are enough.

Amapas sits on the hillside above Zona Romántica. The streets rise quickly, but every climb brings a new angle over Banderas Bay, the Sierra Madre, and the colorful city below.

If you are traveling as a couple, these scenic stops create an easy shared adventure. If you are a digital nomad, they offer the perfect break between work sessions.

Start With the Amapas Hillside Landings

The first views are often the simplest.

As we walk uphill through Amapas, we find small landings, quiet corners, and open spaces between buildings. These are not formal tourist attractions. That is exactly what makes them special.

The hillside streets give you a clear sense of Puerto Vallarta’s natural setting. Green mountains rise behind you. The bay opens in front of you. Below, you can see the low-rise buildings of Zona Romántica and the curve of the coastline.

The climb can be steep. Take it slowly. We like to stop often instead of treating the walk like a workout. A few minutes of walking followed by a quick view break makes the route much more enjoyable.

The concrete stairways are part of daily life here. They connect residential streets and hillside homes. They also create natural photo stops without needing to search for a specific address.

As you move higher, the city begins to spread below you. You can see palm trees, colorful buildings, the beach, and boats moving across the bright water.

The view changes with every few steps. One section may frame the bay through tropical leaves. Another may open toward the coastline. A third may show the green slopes of the Sierra Madre.

The hillside views are wide and distant. El Púlpito feels closer to the water. You see rock formations, palms, small coves, and the blue bay from a lower angle.

The coastal path is a good choice when you want a slower afternoon. Stop to watch the water move around the rocks. Take a few photos. Let the sound of the waves replace the noise of your inbox.

For couples, El Púlpito is an easy place to pause and enjoy the scenery together. For digital nomads, it works well as a screen-free break before returning to your apartment.

Use care around the rocks. Stay on stable surfaces and avoid getting too close to wet edges. The views are beautiful without taking unnecessary risks.

Explore Las Amapas Beach

Las Amapas Beach is another worthwhile stop along the coast.

The beach is smaller and more intimate than some of Puerto Vallarta’s larger stretches of sand. Rocky edges and tropical vegetation give it a more natural feel.

In daylight, the colors are especially clear. The water shifts between blue and green. The rocks create interesting patterns along the shore. The hills rise behind the beach and help explain why Amapas has such dramatic views.

The walk between Amapas, the beach, and the pier also makes it easy to build your own route. You can keep it short or continue toward the Malecón if you still have energy.

Make Time for the Matamoros Lighthouse

If you want another elevated stop, the Matamoros Lighthouse is a great nearby option.

The lighthouse viewpoint is above downtown and offers a shorter climb than some of the higher hill lookouts. It is a practical choice if you want city and bay views without committing to a long hike.

The route includes uphill streets and stairs. Once you reach the lookout, you get a clear view over the rooftops of central Puerto Vallarta, the water, and the mountains beyond.

We suggest adding this stop on a separate walk if you are already spending time in the center. It pairs well with a relaxed visit to the Malecón, local galleries, and nearby cafés in Zona Romántica.

The lighthouse is also a good photography stop because the view feels more urban. Amapas gives you jungle and hillside scenery. The lighthouse gives you a closer look at the city’s layers.

Plan Your Walk Around a Workday

Amapas is especially rewarding for digital nomads because you can fit scenic walks into a normal work schedule.

We often recommend starting with a short daylight walk before opening the laptop. The uphill movement wakes you up and helps you feel connected to the neighborhood.

Another option is to work through the morning, then take a longer break around midday. Walk down to the coast, spend time near El Púlpito or Las Amapas Beach, and return when you feel refreshed.
