I have spent years living in and loving Puerto Vallarta, and if there is one thing I know for sure, it is this: 5 de Diciembre is where the heart of the city truly beats.
If you are a solo traveler looking for real, soul-warming food, you have to get out of the main tourist zones.
I LOVE the energy of this neighborhood!
It is steep, it is vibrant, and it is packed with some of the most AMAZING flavors you will ever find.
Best of all, it is the perfect place to eat alone because nobody is looking at you: everyone is too busy enjoying their tacos.
Start Your Day the Local Way
When I wake up in 5 de Diciembre, the first thing I think about is birria.
In PV, birria is a breakfast food, and there is no better place than Tacos de Birria Chanfay.
I highly recommend getting there early.
The smell of the slow-cooked meat and fresh corn tortillas hitting the grill is the absolute best wake-up call.
You get your tacos, a small cup of consomé (that rich, salty broth) for dipping, and you stand right there on the sidewalk with the locals.
It is a totally authentic local experience that makes you feel like you belong here.
After a heavy breakfast like that, I usually need a slow morning in PV to just digest and enjoy the views.
The hills in 5 de Diciembre offer some of the most breathtaking mountain views you can imagine.
Looking out over the red tile roofs toward the ocean is sooo peaceful.

Midday Snacks and Digital Nomad Fuel
By the time noon rolls around, the sun is high and you need something refreshing.
I always head toward the market area near the cemetery.
You will find vendors selling giant cups of fresh fruit.
I’m talking mango, pineapple, and jicama covered in lime juice and plenty of Tajín.
It is the perfect snack if you are living the digital nomad lifestyle and need a quick break between Zoom calls.
Many of our guests tell us they love 5 de Diciembre because it feels like a real neighborhood.
We offer remote work-friendly accommodations that let you step out your front door and be surrounded by local life in seconds.
Supporting the local community is a big part of why we do what we do.
When you buy a fruit cup from a local vendor, you are helping a family business, just like ours!
The Lunch Scene: Freshness is King
If you want the best ceviche, look for the tiny spots that look like someone’s front porch.
I found a place just a couple blocks from the beach where the owner catches the fish that morning.
You get a tostada piled high with fresh fish, lime, onion, and cilantro.
It is so simple but so GOOD!
As a solo traveler, these small spots are great because you can always find a single stool at the counter.
I love chatting with the owners.
They provide such personalized service and always have tips on the best off-the-beaten-path tours.
That is the beauty of a local, family-run business.
We treat our guests like friends because we want you to see the PV we know and love.

Dinner: The Al Pastor Showdown
When the sun goes down, 5 de Diciembre really comes alive.
The street lights flicker on and the taco stands start spinning the "trompo": that big tower of marinated pork for al pastor tacos.
You have two heavy hitters right near each other: Pepe’s Tacos and El Carboncito.
Both are legendary.
I personally LOVE the energy at Pepe’s.
It is bright, it is loud, and the guys carving the meat are like artists.
They flick a slice of pineapple from the top of the spit and catch it right on the taco every single time.
It is AMAZING to watch!
I highly recommend trying both to see which one you prefer.
Since they are open late into the night, they are the perfect end to a long day of exploring.
Just remember to bring cash!
Most of these authentic local spots don't take cards, but that is part of the charm.

Why I Love 5 de Diciembre for Solo Travelers
This neighborhood is just different.
It isn't polished or fake.
It is real people living their lives, and the food reflects that.
You won't find overpriced tourist traps here.
Instead, you find grandmother’s recipes and secret salsa ingredients.
For a solo traveler, it is the most welcoming place in the world.
You can sit on a plastic chair on a street corner, eat the best meal of your life, and feel completely at home.
The colorful sunrises over the Sierra Madre mountains are just the cherry on top.

Final Thoughts
Puerto Vallarta has so much to offer, but 5 de Diciembre is special.
It is authentic, it is delicious, and it is waiting for you.
Go for the tacos, stay for the views, and leave with a full heart (and stomach).
I highly recommended taking a whole day just to wander these streets.
Don't have a plan.
Just follow your nose and look for where the locals are lining up.
You won't regret it!
We can't wait to welcome you to our beautiful home and help you find your new favorite taco stand.
