I have spent my whole life right here in Puerto Vallarta, and I can tell you that traveling solo here is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Well, I’ve got the inside scoop for you. Here is my personal guide to the best spots for solo travelers and nomads in our beautiful city.
The Social Heart: Zona Romántica (Old Town)
If you want to be right in the middle of everything, Zona Romántica: which we locals also call Old Town: is the place to be. It is easily one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Puerto Vallarta if you love walking out your front door and being steps away from a coffee shop, a taco stand, or a gallery.
The vibe here is incredibly inclusive and friendly. As a solo traveler, you will never feel alone because the streets are always full of life. You can grab a stool at a local bar or sit at a communal table in a cafe and make friends within minutes. It is the social hub of the city, and the energy is just contagious.
But, because it is so popular, it can get a little loud. If you are someone who needs absolute silence to work or sleep, you might find the main streets a bit much. That is why I usually suggest staying just on the edge of this area. You get all the benefits of the restaurants and beaches without the 2 AM street noise.
The Peaceful Oasis: Amapas
Now, if you want my personal favorite spot for solo travelers who value peace and safety, it is Amapas. Amapas is like the quiet, sophisticated cousin of Zona Romántica. It sits just up the hill, so you get these incredible views of the ocean and the mountains, but it is only about a five or ten-minute walk down into the heart of Old Town.
Amapas has a much more residential, local vibe. It feels like a real neighborhood where people know their neighbors. For a solo traveler, safety is a top priority, and Amapas feels very secure. The streets are lined with beautiful condos and lush jungle greenery. It is the perfect spot if you want to rent apartments in puerto vallarta that feel like a private sanctuary.

- The Nest: If you are looking for a quiet getaway, The Nest is amazing. It has a chair swing on the balcony where you can sit and look at the bay with your morning coffee.

Staying in Amapas gives you the best of both worlds. You can go down to the beach, meet people for dinner, and then walk back up to your quiet home to recharge. It is truly the sweet spot for anyone who wants a balanced experience.
The Local Soul: 5 de Diciembre
If you are looking for something a bit more "raw" and authentic, 5 de Diciembre is a great choice. It is located just north of the Malecón (the boardwalk). This neighborhood is a mix of long-time local families and a growing community of digital nomads.
What I love about 5 de Diciembre is the food. You will find some of the best local markets and taco stands here. It is a bit steeper and the streets are a little more rugged than Amapas, but it has a wonderful local soul. It is a great place to wander around with a camera and just soak in the daily life of Puerto Vallarta.
For solo travelers, it’s a bit more of an adventurous choice. It’s safe, but it has more of an urban feel than the polished areas of the South Side. - Stick to Well-Lit Areas: The main parts of Zona Romántica and the Malecón are very well-lit and busy. If you are exploring 5 de Diciembre, just stick to the main streets after dark.
